Betsy,Betty,Elizabeth TURNBULL from Sutherland

I'm looking for any information on Betsy (also could be known as Betty,Elizabeth) TURNBULL, from Sutherland,Scotland.
Betty TURNBULL married John ROSS on 2 feb 1849,Lairg,Sutherland,Scotland. (IGI records-source info. M110534, Dates 1820-1854, source call no-0990575,type-film,printout call no-6902475,type-film.)
After they were married they left scotland and arrived Australia.
In 1861 they left Melbourne,Australia, and arrived in Otago,New Zealand with their 3 children, Margaret,William and John.
I can't find any birth/christening details, or who her parents are. Any help would be most grateful.

Betty Turnbull appears in Lairg in the 1841 census, but unfortunately is not with her parents. She is only 20, but is the oldest in the household. Makes one wonder who the children were!

It's not proof, but there only seems to be one Turnbull family in Lairg in that time frame. Some of the births are on the IGI, as I'm sure you have seen. They appear in 1841:

Jean Turnbull, 45, born England
Magdalene Turnbull, 18, born Sutherland
Ann Turnbull, 15, born Sutherland
Jean Turnbull, 15, born Sutherland

William Turnbull 7, born Sutherland
Helen Turnbull, 5, born Sutherland

Both the parents were born in England, so perhaps they were married there also. In 1851 they conveniently say they were both born in Northumberland, narrowing the search down considerably!

Was John and Betsy's first child Margaret? If so, they might have been still in Scotland for the 1851 census and their birthplaces will be listed:

Later: The Turnbulls have all disappeared from Lairg by 1861. Did they all go to Australia?

John and Betsy ROSS are my 3x great grandparents. They did have a daughter called Margaret, we were not sure if they had her before they left scotland or when they were in Australia.
John and Betsy had 2 more children, 2 sons called William ROSS, who was born 25th Dec 1854, (my 2x great grandfather) he put on his marriage certificate that he was born in Victoria,Australia, and John ROSS, who was born in Ballarat,Victoria, Australia, couple of years later.

I need help finding out when John, Betsy and margaret ROSS left Scotland, and started their journey to Australia, and what port they arrived in. They must have left after or during late 1851 and were in Australia by late 1854, when William was born!!

Can you tell me a good site to check out the ship that were leaving scotland in that time? I have not been able to find anything.

I do know that in oct 1861 John,Betsy and 3 children arrived in Otago,New Zealand.

Glad to have helped pinpoint Margaret's birth.

There are others on this forum who know more about ships to Australia than I do. I'm sure some of them will be on soon and give you some pointers!

I wonder if the Turnbull family emigrated also, since they seem to disappear from Scotland.
