John Gillan c1826

Post by lizanne » Thu May 01, 2008 12:13 pm

I am a new member trying to find the birth/baptism of John Gillan c1826 Monquhitter.
From his death in 1903 I have his parents names as James Gillan and Jane Martin but I can find no record of his birth or a marriage for his parents.
Every census I have him on states his place of birth as Monquhitter but dates of birth do vary.
There are submitted entries for 1821 and 1826 for New Pitsligo (which is where he lived )giving year of death as 1904.
I am just wondering if someone with more experience would be able to find something.
Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks .

Hi Lizanne,
I can't find him either. Are there any other siblings that you know of? This could help to narrow down the search in case the mother's maiden name is wrong.
Who was the informant on his death certificate? I have been led up the garden path once or twice as the informant gave the wrong maiden name of the mother.
Good luck,
Rae
Just another thought - do you have Jane's death certificate?

Hi Rach. I hadn't thought to look for any siblings born to same parents.

He died at the poorhouse in Maud 14/10/1903 the name of the informant is very faint but looks like it would have been an employee of the poorhouse.

As I have been unable to find a death for either of his parents I just presumed that they had died before 1855.

Did he ever marry?

If he did [post 1855] the marriage cert. would have his parent's names or have you located him with any relations on a census - that could give you more clues .

Hi WilmaM,
Yes he did marry 1849 Aberdour Jane Burnett. Therefore no parents names.
I think that I have him on every census 1841-1901 , although if the 1841 I have is correct he is not with his parents.
I have all his children's births marriages ,deaths etc. I also have his wife's birth , death etc.
It is just I can find nothing for him before 1841 so I cannot really take a step backwards. It is just so frustrating.

Hello Lizanne,
I have had another shot at looking for your John but still no joy.
I don't suppose that you know what religion he was? If he was baptised into the R. C. church you won't find those on S.P.
Although my great grandmother was married in the Church of Scotland she was baptised in the R.C church and I only found the date from that church's baptism register which is now held in the local archives.
This is a difficult one for you to begin with.

Thanks for looking Rach,
I have no idea what religion he was .
I will put this one on the back burner again for awhile.
I will see if I can find anything further when I go up to Scotland later this year. This line of my tree is causing no end of problems.
Other lines I have managed to get back to early 1600's and beyond.
