I have just been reading Lizanne's posting and it got me wondering about an unsuccessful search for the birth/baptism for Catherine MCartney born about 1811 in Glasgow, possibly Dunbarton, her mothers ms is McInally. Her names have had many variaitions depending on what I am looking at, she has been documented as Cath, Catherine and Catheryne, McCartney Mcartney and Mcartan.
She married Hugh Glacken in Glasgow on 4/10/1831. In one of the poor law appliations their religion is shown as Roman Catholic. perhaps this is why I cant find anything! I wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this please!
thank you
Helen

Hi Helen,
The Parochial Registers, which became the OPRs were written and maintained by the Established Church of Scotland. In theory the people of other churches were supposed to give their baptismal and marriage details in to the Established Church for recording, but in reality this seldom happened. Most of the other churches kept their own records, but these are not so accessible. Some are in the National Archives of Scotland amongst the Kirk Session records. Some are in the Scottish Catholic Archives (I believe these are gradually being copied, with the copies going into NAS). Some remain within the individual church, diocese or somewhere else in the church organisation.
Unfortunately none of these are online, so they require you to see them for yourself (or have someone do so for you).
The other possibilities include: the child was never baptized; the child was baptized but no record was made; or a record was made, but has since been lost or destroyed.
All the best,
AndrewP

Hi Helen:
ScotlandsPeople produces 1 marriage registration for:
Surname: Glacken
Forename: Hugh
Sex: Male
Spouse's Name: Cath* (which then turns out to be Catherine)
Date from: 1 Jan 1831
Date to: 31 Dec 1831
I've no active credits on SP, so can't view it, but the record should give Catherine's proper surname.
Please excuse me, if I seem a bit thick, at this hour. Am I reading correctly?
Catherine MCartney born about 1811, to Cath/Catherine/Catheryne McCartney/Mcartney/Mcartan M.S. McInally, goes on to marry Hugh Glacken in 1831?
Best wishes,
Frances

thanks for the response from Andrewp and Frances.
Catherine Mcartney was born in 1811 to Margaret Mcinally and John Mcartney. Sorry if the way I put it was confusing you Frances.
I have already found Hugh and Catherines marriage certificate but it did not give me much information only that Catherines ms is McArtan. Should I assume this is correct as other sources as I said previously say it is Mcartney.

HI hg
What you could try is to search for a death. Although the ages at death are notoriously off. It may confirm the parents, then again it may not.
The other alternative for family is to do census searches.
I know this sounds like a bet each way but deaths are worth a try if it is after statutory registration.
