Do I just wait for a response now... I am finding the processes a bit bewildering! (Put it down to old age!). If you can't read t, can/do I send ahard copy to someone for further help?
Thanks for everything

Hi Innes and warm welcome to TalkingScot from me too! [scotland-flag]

Here's what it looks like to me...
James Hutchison and Eliz Crawfurd ----------- had their 10th ? child born 17th Oct, baptized 9th Nov. named James.
Jas. _______ & _______ _____, wit.

I just checked the IGI and you will also find this birth extract along with some other submissions you might want to check out.

Dear Anne H,
Thanks for the reply ... I got as far as you did (not meant to sound disparaging!), but the link you supplied gave me one word more - after "Elizabeth Crawfurd" the link gives me the clue to the next word - it's "Shettleston". So, thanks for your help!
Innes

Hi Innes,

Here is my attempt at filling in the blanks from above.
  • James Huctchison and Eliz Crawfurd Shettleston
had their 10th Child born 17th Sepr and bd 9th Novr named
James. Jas Scott & Jas Barr wit.
I went back to SP and downloaded the OPR image. I cleaned it up and saved it as a TIF image. It can be seen at:

http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... ?pos=-1554

The names are clearer. Each time you have saved it as a JPG (and scanned and re-saved it?), the quality has degraded. JPG is an economic way of saving images, but the cost of that economy is in the quality.

My feeling is that the birth month should be September rather than October. If you look closely at the first letter then you see some of the parts which are in heavy ink (two passes of the pen) and those in light ink (one pass of the pen), then I think you can see an S in there. I see the third letter sas more likely to be a p than a t.

All the best,

AndrewP

What a difference in the image, Andrew...very clear!

I too thought at first the birth month was Sept., but the more I enlarge the image, the month to me still looks like it is Octr....but who knows?

Anne H

Looks like Oct'r to me as well. Otherwise the suggested transcription seems right.

I can't tell all of you how gratifying it is to receive all this help!
I tend to agree that the birth date is probably/possibly (!) October, if for no other reason that in those days the christening/baptism tended to follow on quickly after the birth. Infant mortality was high, as we all know, and James, in this entry, is stated to be the 10th child! I now have to try and discover who the others were!
Thanks again... thanks a lot.

Many of the items are taken from parish records, but many are also entered by an LDS member, so someone is/has been working on them  =D>
