No Marriage Record ?

Post by trish58 » Sun Jun 08, 2008 8:20 am

Hi everyone

Help needed Please, Not able to find marriage record for John Kennedy & Mary Guthrie.

I have found the births of both Son's Alexander 3/8/1779 Wigtown. Also James born 11/3/1781 Wigtown on OPR

Checked for marriage from 1760-1781, not able to find on LDS either, though I did all areas search. Also used wildcards for Mary's birth to see if this would give me a clue.
Can anyone help please. :?:

Thanks
Trish

Hi Trish
Was the wording on the OPR what you'd expect to see, mentioning "so-and-so and his spouse", "lawful son", that kind of thing?

OPRs exist for that area at the time:
901. WIGTOWN
901/1
B 1706-1819
M 1707-82
D -

901/2
B 1819-54
M 1832 (one entry)
D -
RNE

...but as you can see, later on are not well kept from the marriages point of view. Wonder how complete they are before then?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Trish,

Further to Lesley's information above, the Statistical Accounts for Wigtown don't fill you with hope for finding the marriage record (assuming the marriage was in Wigtown).

Statistical Accounts of Scotland (1791-1799): Wigtown
As a register of marriages, of births, and burials, has not been kept, for a considerable time past, the annual number of these cannot be precisely ascertained. The marriages however, are generally prolific, and the number of births to them, may, on average, be rated at 6
.

Statistical Accounts of Scotland (1834-1845): Wigtown
Parochial Registers - The earliest bears date 1701, and is brought down to 1740. After this period it has been irregularly kept, and much neglected until 1800.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew & Lesley

Thanks for that, looks like another "twig" remains unfinished, it is so frustrating, and happens often with my tree.

Guess I will have to start on another "twig"

Thanks for your help as always :)
