Robert Young Paisley

Post by GREATSCOTT » Sun Jul 06, 2008 11:37 pm

Looking for birth info on Robert Young in Paisley.
I am pretty sure he was married in Paisley 1828 to a Jean Patrick.
Acording to Poor Relief records he was born in Paisley and died in 1841.
He had children Sarah, William, Ann, Robert.
I don't know his birth date and am trying to find his parents names

Hi Greatscott,
Welcome to Talking Scot! [talkingscot]

It looks like Robert was still alive on the date for the 1841 census:

West Street No 11, Paisley Martyres, Renfrewshire
Robert Young, 30, born Renfrewshire, Cotton H L W
Jean Young, 30, born Renfrewshire
Sarah Young, 10, born Renfrewshire
William Young, 8, born Renfrewshire
Ann Young, 2, born Renfrewshire
Robert Young, 4 Mo, born Renfrewshire

So Robert would appear to have been born in Renfrewshire between 1807-1811(remember that the ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 in the 1841 census). That said, there is no way to tell which one of the several Robert Youngs born in Renfrew at that time is the correct one :( Was any mention made of his siblings in the poor relief record? If he had a sibling who lived past 1855, we might be able to track down the parents' names that way.

All the best,
Sarah

Hi

I had a quick look on SP and could only find one Robert Young born in Renfrewshire between 1800 and 1812. (I don't want to take you off on a wild goose chase, so check this against your own sources). Are you working backwards from information you are sure of to find Robert Young?

14/08/1803 YOUNG ROBERT JOHN YOUNG/HELEN HILLCOTE FR363 M Renfrew /RENFREW
No way to know as yet if this is the correct one, and a search on the IGI produced two offspring for these parents:- said Robert above and also a brother Thomas.

IGI Search found 44 returns for birth/baptism of Robert Young in Renfrewshire. (Search was Robert Young, Birth/Christening, 1803 - 1813, Renfrew, Scotland, British IslesExact Spelling: Off). Using the batch number given for this record, C115754 you’ll find

1. ROBERT YOUNG - International Genealogical Index - British IslesGender: Male Christening: 14 AUG 1803 Renfrew, Renfrew, Scotland
2. THOMAS YOUNG - International Genealogical Index - British IslesGender: Male Christening: 27 JAN 1805 Renfrew, Renfrew, Scotland

From the information you have at the moment it's not possible to know if these are the correct people.

I also looked on the IGI for Sarah Young born 1830 (Sarah found her in the 1841 Census for you, with her family). Strangely the other children did not appear with Robert Young and Jean Patrick as parents, so perhaps Jean Patrick had died and Robert remarried??

Sarah Young - International Genealogical Index - British Isles Gender: Female Birth: 1830 Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland

If you go to her on the IGI you'll see her reocrd was submitted. It is not an extract. That means that a member of the LDS church submitted that record, so you might be able to make further enquiries there.

I may have missed something really obvious, but I could find NONE of the children on SP. Maybe I just need a drink! I see from Sarah's reply that they appeared in the 1841 Census at West Street, Paisley. This is very close to the Martyrs' Church, and also to the area in which many of the local cotton mills were located. (I see Robert was a cotton weaver). I had wondered if they were perhaps not actually from Scotland, but until you can find more information, we'll have to wait and see.

If you're curious about the Martyrs Church, here's some information from the Renfrewshire Council web:-

http://www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/ilwwcm/p ... eyChurches
If you follow the links on the right of the page, you'll also find information about the cotton mills in Paisley, only one of which now stands (to be used as a business/craft centre and for flats).

Am interested to see how you get on. I'm sure you'll get plenty of advice on TS.

Good luck.

Liz
