Hi Heather,
The information you were given that Edinburgh (I presume that you are referring to New Register House) does not have the Old Monklands pre-1855 deaths on computer is correct. So far GROS have not indexed the deaths in the OPRs. The LDS never indexed them for the IGI as their interest is in the christenings (or births) and marriages. I believe there is a plan for GROS to have the OPR deaths indexed at some stage, but it is far down the priority list. Their priority list can be found on the ScotlandsPeople website, under "What's in the database", then "availability".
In most OPRs, the deaths are a list of hirings of the mortcloths rather than a notice of the death, so the information is sparse from a genealogy point of view. Some parishes have no death records at all in their OPRs.
Unless anyone, such as a local Family History Society, has indexed the deaths in the OPRs, then the only way for anyone to find these for you is if they can search the microfilm reels - often a drawn out task for little result in the OPR deaths. If someone can get some results for you, then good, but don't be disappointed if there is no information forthcoming. This is one area where there are frequently no useful results to be found.
Another source to consider is MI's (Monumental Inscriptions). If someone has transcribed the information from the headstones (presumably in Old Monklands Cemetery) and published it, you could find some of your people there. That is assuming there was ever a headstone and that the stone survived the years and is still legible.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

As well as the OPRs, you will find that some kirk session records contain death/mortcloth info, - most of these are held at National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh.
There is a parallel NBI (National Burials Index) project in Scotland, - parallel to that which has now reached the stage of the second edition of the CD for England & Wales, - but all that I that I am aware of that has been completed is a CD from Fife FHS, and some Argyll parishes by Glasgow & West of Scotland FHS.

James Gray
Hello Angel
Might not be your man, and I don't have too much info, because he's as far back as I got on a collateral line, but my James Gray is:
JAMES GRAY, A sailor, Married to a MARGARET HAY, had a daughter ELISABETH GRAY born 7 Feb 1845 in Maybole, Ayrshire. This Elizabeth married John Nestor in 1865 in Ballantrae, Ayrshire, by which time James Gray was dead.
That is all I know about this John Gray, but if he turns out to be yours too, I can give you info forward on daughter Elisabeth.

I have just visited this website for the first time after doing a google search for Nestors of Scotland.
Elizabeth [Gray] Nestor is my great, great grandmother, so if she is in your line somewhere I guess maybe we are related. I notice you mention her as belonging to a collateral line. I wonder if your line comes through a John Nestor, born 18 aug 1894 in Kilmarnock, who migrated to the US in 1923. If so I would be even more interested in hearing from you, as I am presently corresponding with a lovely man called Thomas Nestor, (who was the last of the Nestor's remaining in Scotland). John Nestor of Kilmarnock is his uncle.
Look forward to finding out our connection.
Regards
Ann Dawson

James Gray, John Nestor
Hello Ann Dawson,
Yes, I am connected to John Nestor of Kilmarnock, who married my mother's aunt Margaret McDonald Smith Christie on 18 June 1920 in Ayr. They relocated in Boston and the Christie family followed. One of their daughters is still living in the Boston area. I will send a private message with the info and my e mail address.
What a happy message to get!
Best regards, and we look forward to hearing more.
