Hi Jean,
There is a marriage in the IGI for Thomas Lindsay and Mary Ann Hacket (no 'l') on 23 Aug 1860 in Bridgeton, Glasgow
This looks like the family in 1871, with all the children given to that couple on the IGI
except John, who would have been born in 1863. So maybe that John died and they had another one.
1871
29 Montague St, Rothesay, Bute
Thomas Lendsay, 32, Head, born Ireland, Jenmigman Caburch Loabourer (anyone want to hazard a guess as to what that occupation actually is?)

Mary Ann Lendsay, 25, Wife, born Lanark, Lanarkshire
Annie Lendsay, 9, Daughter, born Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scholar
Margaret Lendsay, 7, Daughter, born Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scholar
Thomas Lendsay, 4, Son, born Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scholar
James Lendsay, 2, Son, born Lanark, Lanarkshire
Edward Lendsay, 6 Mo, Son, born Lanark, Lanarkshire
In 1881 Thomas is a cabinet maker, so I'll bet that his occupation in 1871 was something like
Journeyman Cabinet Labourer. His wife is not there, so she may have died, and indeed, another John has been born in the meantime, although he is somewhat older than he claimed on his marriage cert. The family is in Partick and John is 8, born Glasgow (all the children are born Glasgow in this census).
Do you think this could be your family? What was John's occupation on his marriage cert, and what occupation was given for his father?
Later: one more question: was he a bachelor or a widower on his marriage cert? The John I have been following appears to have married a Catherine just before the 1901 census.
All the best,
Sarah
