Checking the O.P.R. Marriage(420/0030 0397) for Elizabeth Carey to James Hutchison on 9 February 1818, I notice that her father's name is given as John Carey Wright.. I wonder if this is a transcription error, or something I am missing?!

Well my first impulse was to think that "wright" was meant to describe what the chap did for an occupation. I've had a peek at the page though and the registrar doesn't seem to name occupations on any of the other entries...although he isn't consistent in what he does record either so still not out of the question that this could be the case....unless of course you suspect the surname WRIGHT truly does deserve a spot in your family tree!

Best wishes
Jean

The record in the IGI has :

ELIZABETH CAREY Female
Father: JOHN CAREY
Spouse: JAMES HUTCHISON
Marriage: 09 FEB 1818 Cupar, Fife, Scotland
Extracted marriage record for locality listed in the record

So I'm inclined to go with Jean's sugestion that he was a wright in occupation, not a Wright in name.

This could be a fairly common problem, as many of the surnames we use were in actual fact occupations, though a lot of them are in use ONLY as names. Like Cordiner, Fletcher, Baxter.

Only a guess, but is it possible that her father being a "Wright" as in an occupation was locally regarded as worthy of inclusion in this bride's details?

Or there was more than 1 John Carey locally, so they needed to distinguish between them?

Good thinking, Wilma. =D>

Sounds a lot more likely.

The descendants of the other fellow are probably wondering who John Carey Weaver or John Carey Miner are!

Merry Christmas all!
