Would this be the same marriage

Post by trish1 » Wed Jan 07, 2009 2:56 pm

Somewhat related to my geography query re Nairn/Inverness, I have two marriage records from the IGI

Donald Johnstone married Janet Mackenzie 12 mar 1816 Petty, Inverness
IGI Batch M111065 1758-1820 Film 0990714, 0990715

Donald Johnston married Janet Mackenzie 5 Apr 1816 Killearnan, Ross and Cromarty
IGI Batch M110682 1815-1854 0990584

Would this be banns for the same couple. If I looked at the parish register images, would they provide information to help determine if it is one or two couples?

Hi Trish,

These will be records of the banns being called prior to marriage. Most of the OPR marriage records are records of the proclamation of banns rather than of the marriage itself. It is quite common for the banns to have been called in the home parish of both the bride and the groom, which is probably what you have here.

All the best,

Thanks Andrew, I doubted it would be two couples - the parishes being about 10 miles apart. If the Oz records I am buying confirm that this is my wanted couple, I will buy to images in the hope of maybe finding a little more information.
