Edinburgh parishes question

Post by speleobat2 » Fri Mar 20, 2009 9:00 pm

Hi everyone,

I was just looking at an OPR from SP from 1794. The groom is shown as from "Old Church Parish". Any ideas as to which church this was?

The bride is from the New Grayfriars parish.

Hi Carole
I wonder if Old Church is St Giles? If not, perhaps Canongate?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

I just uploaded the OPR. Maybe there will be some clues in the other entries.

I was looking at William Clerehugh and Margaret Meldrum from Dec. 25, 1794.

Thanks,

Hi again Lesley,

Alan had posted that link in my Roll of Burgesses thread so I just went back to the docuement and read it again.

It says that at the time of his second marriage in 1810, William lived in Old Church Parish, Edinburgh.

Under Margaret Meldrum it says the marriage to William in 1794 was recorded in the old parochial registers of Edinburgh parish. This was their marriage in Old Church Parish which I posted the OPR for.

I have friends who live in Old Church Lane, which is in Duddingston Village - if you are looking on a map it's to the east side of Arthur's Seat. Perhaps Duddingston could have been called Old Church - although I live in Edinburgh I'm really from the west so don't have any detailed knowledge of Edinburgh history.

Searching Ross - Lochwinnoch & Eaglesham, Renfrewshire; Glasgow; Glover - Paisley; Macadam - Glasgow.

Must have been a hiccup in my computer. It was the OPR url, but it's working fine now.
