Puzzled about OPR Death/Burial coverage

Post by heymarky » Sat Apr 04, 2009 5:43 pm

According to the information on SP (http://www.scotlandspeoplehub.gov.uk/pd ... 7to119.pdf p. 7) there should be OPR Death/Burial records for Inverness parish in Inverness-shire from 1820 to 1853.

When I search with:
Surname: 'mc*',
gender 'both',
City/County: 'Inverness',
Parish: 'Inverness',
Date from: '1/1/1851'
Date to: '31/12/1854'

I get no matches.

Am I missing something?

hi Marky
One reason may be as folloes: If the date range for OPRs says they exist for 1820 to 1853, that does not mean that there are complete sets of records for those years e.g. there may be gaps of seveal years within that date range or there may be, for instance, only a handful of deaths recorded for some years. You'd really need to see the microfilms or consult one of the books which give detailed acccounts of what the condition of the OPRs is for that parsih and that range of years.

Best wishes
Lesley

Why not try just entering M*c or just enter * in front of the name (I think that works for first letters).

I've had no joy with the OPR deaths myself...very sad. :(

Hi Heymarky:

If you enter

Surname: 'mc*',
gender 'both',
City/County: 'Inverness',
Parish: All Parishes
Date from: '1/1/1851'
Date to: '31/12/1854'

You will find 23 hits, and if you are really lucky, maybe one of them will be yours?

Worth a try. But actually I'm looking for:

Isabella McBean who uses her maiden name Reid in 1851 census.

Oh and the grand-children who seem to be clearly named for her are all named Rebecca (they have Reid as middle name and are in the named-after-maternal-grandmother birth order and their siblings are named according to the patterns).

I'm going to be on vacation for a while starting Monday and will pick up when I return.

I was just hoping for one of those, "oh, that's because xyz" answers.

Cheers and thanks,

Marky

Hi Marky,

The Statistical Accounts for Scotland from the 1840s for Inverness Parish does not bode well for your search.

Second Statistical Account for Scotland - Inverness Parish - page 13

It makes no mention of burial registers being kept. It doesn't say that burial registers don't exist, but if they did, I would have expected at least a mention in that paragraph.

All the best,

AndrewP

That's great, Mallog :D Sometimes I think our ancestors feel sorry for us when we can't find them and then lead us in the right direction. :)
