help with one more word...

Post by stepmars » Tue May 05, 2009 3:39 pm

Please refer to following OPR marriage register extract:
http://www.talkingscot.com/gallery/disp ... fullsize=1

The bottom line lists the groom, his occupation (I think) and the bride. Can anyone tell me what the occupation is?

Thanks,
Steve.

Hi Steve:

That's far beyond me, but have you had a look under the Sources tab in the page header? There is some information there on Scottish handwriting which may be of help.

I'm sure someone will be along soon better able to assist you.

Cordiner = shoemaker.

At least that's what I see :lol:
McGee (Donegal to Edinburgh), Jamieson/Guthrie (Leith), Keddie (Peebles, Galashiels), Little (Cavers, Traquair), Arthur (Galashiels) , Paterson (Edinburgh, with occ. spells in Stirling, Greenock, Leith), Ralston (Glasgow to Stirling), Greig (Elgin)

I think the line above says "Thomas Glen Cordiner..." The occupation for Johnne Marshel, however, looks like it starts with a G if you compare it to the G in Glen and the C in Cordiner above it.

Thanks,
Steve
