Looking for help with unusual entry on OPR banns

Post by etg63 » Wed Aug 19, 2009 5:35 pm

Hi

I have an extract of the banns of my maternal G G G Grandparents John Dow and Charlotte Herriot.

The extract can be viewed here:

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/etg63/

Can anyone help me with an explanation for the word 'withdrawn' that is written above the entry?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It looks to me that these are records of the proclamation of the banns, with some of them following through to include the marriage. It looks like one of the couples withdrew their intent to marry.

The proclamation of the banns is the most regular record in the OPRs for a marriage. However, unless the record goes on to say the marriage took place, then there is no written evidence from that record that the deed was ever completed.

All the best,
