Can anyone help me dislodge a few bricks

Post by runmerry » Sun Sep 27, 2009 8:56 pm

I have a bit of a brick wall concerning Jane Miler (1809?-1854) the first wife of John Hutcheon. The only information I have about her is an M.I. in Ordihuhill churchyard, the 1851 census, where they are residing at Whitewells, Ordiquihill, and the marriage and death registration of their son.
The 1851 census gives her age as 46 the M.I. says she died at the age of 45 in 1854. I think the M.I. is more reliable as far as age goes because John Hutcheons age is given as 49 in the census and according to the OPR he was born in Boharm in 1809.
I have scoured the OPR's up, down and sideways and no sign of her birth or marriage where I would expect to find them.
There is a Jane Watson on the census listed as a grandaughter and it made me wonder if Jane Miller had been married before, if so is there any hope of finding her?
Any suggestions/help gratefully received!

Regards
Jenny
P.S. Her name is spelled Miler on The M.I. and Miller every where else.

Hi Jenny,
I'm going to go out on a limb here:

In the 1851 census there is a "cousin" in the household named Isabella Pirie, age 16.
In 1841 she is already in the household, a girl of 6 (listed as F(emale) S(ervant)
Another F(emale) S(ervant) in 1841 is Elisabeth Simpson, 15. Could she be a relative also?

In the IGI there is a marriage between John Hutcheon and Jane Simpson in 1836 in Drainie, Moray. Could this be the couple, or do you already have John and Jane's marriage record?

Might be worth a try to trace Isabella Pirie and Jane Watson to their marriage or death and find out who their parents were.

There is an Isabella Pirie in the 1861 census, born in Banffshire, a servant in the house of the Simpson family in Glasgow...

All the best,
Sarah

Jenny,

There is the following death on SP:

1858 WATSON JANE SIMPSON F 11 ORDIQUIHILL /BANFF

I don't have the extra credits to buy it, but this could be the granddaughter on the 1851 census.

Hi Sarah,
Where did you find them on the '41 census because as far as I can see they aren't at Whitewells then and I don't know where they were.
I did notice the Hutcheon/Simpson marriage in Drainie and was quite taken with it but it didn't seem just right (gut feeling!!) I found another marriage of a John Hutcheon / HELEN Miller in Marnoch in 1835 and son James was born in Marnoch. Could Helen turn into Jane or is that a bit of a stretch.
Most of my male Hutcheons seem to go through wives at a rate of knots without a lot of children to show for it and the females have loads of kids and no husbands!
Thanks for the ideas for an oblique search and thanks Carol for starting me off!
Regards
Jenny

Hi Jenny,
They are in Marnoch, under the spelling Hutchen.
Cheers,
Sarah

Thanks Sarah,
Never thought to alter the spelling as I've always found them as Hutcheons with an O. My mother always adamant that this was the way it was spelt and no other.

Jenny

Hi Jenny
your mother may have said that the name was spelled with an O, but I am sure the ancestors before her were not that particular with the spelling. :D In the past the spelling of a name was not that important, and if a person couldn't read, then of course they could not check the spelling. :D
