I have been searching for a Birth Record for Daniel, who was born in Irvine, Ayrshire on 20/5/1802, for some considerable time.
He joined the Merchant Navy as an Apprentice in 1815, he did not serve in the Royal Navy but he did do two years foreign service on board one ship and spent the rest of his time as a Merchant Seaman sailing from Irvine Harbour to various Ports in British waters. He died in 1850.
The precise date of birth came from his Seaman's Ticket Number in 1845 and corresponds to an similar record from 1842. On both records he is noted as Literate.
I have most of his life story but that birth record, apprenticeship records and the names of his Parents still elude me.
I have checked all of the birth records through the normal sources, SP, IGI & Ayrshire Library.
Any other suggestions would be welcome.

Hi, thanks for your interest. He was married but the record was of no help.Daniel was recorded as Stuart but all subsequent records Stewart. Susan was Susanna, she was born on Arran in 1801.
The original wedding record states:
Kilbride Parish, Arran:
Daniel Stuart, Sailor, and Susan McAlister. Mause.
The place name Mause, at one time the farm ran from the Douglas Hotel area to Kilmichael, Brodick. The old farm was divided into several sections and is known as now Mayish, East Mayish and West Mayish. It could have been any of these sections that Susan lived.

Re: Daniel Stewart
Have you traced him in the 1841 census? Or was he at sea then?
Just wondering if a birth place was given, that may give any siblings on the OPRs.

Hi Thanks for your interest.
As I mentioned I have got most of the family details, certainly from his Marriage in 1828, his date and place of birth were listed on his Seaman's Ticket in 1845.
In 1841 his family were in Halfway, now Montgomery Street, Irvine. I have a possible 1841 census for him at The Kings Arms Inn, Hartsop & Pattersdale, (near Penrith, Cumbria). He is listed as born Scotland, occupation MS, I assume Merchant Seaman, along with 15 others, one other born Scotland of the rest half born Cumbria the other half different counties of England. So either the weather was very bad or they were on a "Training Course".

There is a submission at the IGI for a Lilias Stewart born to Daniel and Susan.
There is this extract of a marriage -
DANIEL STEWART
Marriages:
Spouse: LILLIAS HAMILTON
Marriage:
15 NOV 1799 Stewarton, Ayr, Scotland
I wonder if this couple might be worth following up.

Re: Daniel Stewart
Hi Annette,
I have birth records for all of their children, except the last which is census and other info, thank you.
Children of Daniel Stewart and Susanna McAllister:
i. 2. James Stewart was born 7 April, 1829 in Troon, Dundonald Parish.
ii. 3. Daniel Stewart was born 27 June, 1832 in Troon, Dundonald Parish and died after 1901 in Kilwinning, Ayrshire.
iii. 4. Ronald Stewart was born 25 June, 1834 in Troon, Dundonald Parish and died 11 September, 1882 in Woodhill Sidings, Glasgow South Western Railway.
iv. 5. Lilias Stewart was born 14 August, 1836 in Troon, Dundonald Parish.
v. 6. William Stewart was born 1839 in Troon, Dundonald Parish and died 31 March, 1878 in Old Rome, Dundonald Parish.
vi. 7. Elizabeth Stewart was born 1840 in Irvine, Ayrshire.
NB. Troon, Dundonald refers to what is now the Harbour area of Irvine.
James & Lilias I believe may possible have died before 1841. The rest I have their full history.
My notes on Daniel & Lilias Hamilton.
Still require to establish who Daniels Parents were, there was one interesting IGI Marriage, Daniel Stewart & Lilias Hamilton, Stewarton, Ayrshire, 15 Nov. 1799.
Daughter Elizabeth, baptism, Irvine 22/9/1800 but no other births recorded for this couple. Could she have been a sister to our Daniel? Only record of Lilias Hamilton Birth 1770 Arran, father James.
So as you can see I think they are strong contenders but without some documentary evidence who knows?

Hi Lesley,
Whilst I am aware of that I think this may be an exception, the term for Merchant Seaman is normally Mer S but I think the enumerator might have taken a short cut. The other observation is that the Inn had no guests only Servants?
