I've never made much use of the OPR indices on SP due to the superior nature of the IGI and Scottish Churches CDs in terms of the search capabilities based on the parents' names, i.e. just enter the full names of the parents, and if there are matching records, the full family will pop out. (As it will on IGI on-line except there is a good amount of IGI CD info "missing" on-line.)
The info on the parents' names is in the data files that GROS supply to ScotlandonLine so that there's no reason, as far as I'm aware, that it shouldn't be possible to have such a search on SP.
I may have missed it previously, or it may have snuck in on the last update, but there are two additional fields , for "Parent Name", but surname only, I assume, in the Births & Baptisms area.
For example I've just searched for a child with the surname only of SMITH and "Parent Name" entries of SMITH and BROWN in the period 1840 to 1854, which gives 90 hits, and, without cheking out all 90 in detail, a look at the first 2 pages confirms that there are several belonging the same families.
Have I missed something, - was this facility there and functioning from Day 1?..............
OK it would be great to have fields for the parents' given names as well, but let's be thankful for small mercies, for those of us who can't easily access the Scottish Churches CD!

Re: OPR birth searches
Hello David,
the search on parent name has been functional from the start. The old brown and yellow form had a field named "Parent Surname". This was wrongly named, since it would search on anything.
For example, if we had "JAMES BROWN/MARGARET SMITH FR1234", you could search on Margaret, FR1234, with or without wildcards - any text in that entry.
The only difference in the new pastel colours form is that there are two parent name fields.
Regards,
John

Malcolm, the Scottish Church's CD is great. My gggrandparent's 1852 marriage was not to be found in the online IGI, SP database, or OPR micro-fiche, but there they were on the CD. I then ordered the film of the OPR and confirmed the record. I wish the Scottish Church's CD was available for purchase.
Kindest regards,
Laura

Sorry to latch on here at the end but the Scottish Church CD sounds like something I've been looking for. I've found a couple of errors already in the OPR indexes concerning my own family and have a few missing births which I believe are mainly down to wrong transcriptions. Could someone please post more info on this CD or send me a PM- thanks.

Cheers David. I've had a look on the LDS site and cannot see it though. I'm probably not looking correctly. The closest I found was "Using the Scottish Church Records and Old Parochial Registers (OPR) Index". Can it be purchased directly from the LDS site?DavidWW wrote: Rab

Hi Rab
Glad to read elsewhere you managed 15 minutes of peace at least!! Now for your question....the Early Scottish Church OPR marriage and christening records is a computerized database but it's not available on the internet nor is it available for purchase. As near as I know the only way to access it is to visit an LDS Family History Center in person. Something I should add that I have never done as it's just not convenient for me to get there when they are open!!!
So....there's your bit of bad news for today...
Best wishes
Jean

That's the one ........... Using the Scottish Church Records ..snipped.... Index.
'Fraid it can't be purchased, only used on the relevant CD at LDS FHCs (and NRH in Edinburgh).
