THOMAS TURNBULL-Can't find his birth

Post by frances » Sat Sep 10, 2011 1:56 pm

Am hoping to help a friend out with this query. She has tried unsuccessfully for quite some time to locate the birth records of GG Grandfather THOMAS TURNBULL.

What she does know is the following.

He married HELEN HUTCHISON on the 17th April 1873 in the parish of Dairsie, Fife. At the time of his marriage he gave his age as 24 .His parents were THOMAS TURNBULL and MARY QUINN.

He died on the 18th November 1927 at Guardbridge aged 77, his birth would be c 1849/50. According to the 1881 census he was born in Cupar, Fife.

I have also had a look for this record without any success :? , any help would be much appreciated .

Frances :)

Hi Frances,

It looks like Mary Turnbull (ms Quinn) probably died by 1859. There is no obvious sign of her death certificate, so assuming she died in Scotland, then is was probably pre-1855 and there is no record of it. What appears to be her youngest son was born in Dairsie (same place as both Thomases can be found in the 1861 and 1871 censuses), so that would be a good starting place if seeking a monumental inscription for her.

In the 1861 and 1871 censuses, Thomas senior is married to Bridget. The 1861 census shows a child born to Thomas and Bridget (ms Fines); her birth can be found in 1859, but being 1856-1860 the marriage details are not given on that birth certificate. There is a 9 year gap before this child before you find the older children (probably children of Mary Quinn). There are 4 older children shown on the 1861 census; Thomas was the third of these by age. The 1861 census tells you where in Ireland Thomas senior was born.

Back to your original question, there is a (good?) possible baptismal record (showing a birth date) for Thomas to be found in the Catholic records in 1848 in Dunfermline.

I see no obvious sign of the family in the 1851 census.

Another child, Patrick, can be found in the Catholic baptismal records for 1852 in Kirkcaldy. He doesn't appear in the 1861 census with his siblings.

All the best,

AndrewP

A little later...

Found them in the 1851 census, including wife Mary (ms Quinn). They are enumerated as TRIMBLE, but it is certainly the same family group as found (without Mary) in 1861 and 1871.

The village name given in 1851, Osnaburgh, is another name for Dairsie. Wikipedia tells us that Dairsie village is made up of the two smaller villages of Osnaburgh and Dairsiemuir.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew,

Now why didn't I think to look at the Catholic Records :?

Can always rely on someone coming up with an answer. Will check it out tomorrow also the census (Trimble). My friend will be delighted. :D

Thanks again

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the info. Down loaded all the relevant documents today. I also managed to find (in the Catholic records) what is likely to be the marriage of Thomas and his second wife Bridget Fynes /Finnes, Dundee 1856.

Frances :)
