Hi to all at TS,
As i have a few descendants who married in Secession Churches i am always on the look out for information on how to find the records.
I have managed to obtain a Register of the Secession Churches in Scotland. However, as it is a 2000 publication some of the records are held in the Strathclyde Regional Archives.
For example the area Partick i am looking at has the Call no: CH3/1167 and then /24 for Births 1841 - 95 and /25 M 1841 -95.
Can anyone tell me where i would now have to look for this? Also if anyone wants me to look for a Call number for a particular area let me know.
Thanks,
Ailsa

Re: Secession Church Records
Hi Ailsa,
The NAS online index refers to CH3/1167, but doesn't mention parts 24 or 25 (or any beyond part 6).

The text for each of these says that they are held by Glasgow City Archives, which I understand to mean that they are held in the Mitchell Library.NAS index wrote:CH3/1167 Partick, East United Presbyterian Church, United Free 1863-1907
. . CH3/1167/1 . . Minutes 1867-1891

Re: Secession Church Records
Hi AndrewP,
Thanks for the reply. I have sent the Mitchell Library a query and bookmarked the page - another one to add to the long list!
The book i bought on the Internet is "Registers of the Secession Churches in Scotland by Diane Baptie".
On the particular area in Glasgow i am looking at now - Partick (my McFarlane tribe) it has 2 entries :
Partick. United Secession, Partick East UP. Dowanhill UP, UF, C of S - CH3/1167 Strathclyde Regional Archives
/24 B 1841 - 95
/25 M1841 - 95
Partick, Victoria Park (Whiteinch) UP,UF, C of S - CH3/1264 Strathclyde Regional Archives
/21 B 1875 - 1923
The first one is more of interest to me as the family of McFarlane moved to Partick from Perth in 1841. Their first child was born in Perth but the other 5 children were all born in Partick but i can find no trace of the births in Glasgow or elsewhere. I may of course be wrong but i thought it would be worth looking into it.
I also have a Dunfermline line who were married in a Secession church but i have'nt got round to looking into that yet as i want to find out where i have to look first.
Anyone who thinks there may be some info in the book please feel free to ask - Most of the info is laid out as above but for different regions.
Regards
Ailsa

Re: Secession Church Records
Hi All,
Very impressed with the quick reply from The Mitchell Librarian ! She told me i would be better to telephone one of the archivists and speak to them directly as i have the reference numbers and that i may have to visit them personally.
I have just spoken to one of the archivists there and like you said AndrewP she also cannot go beyond part 6. she did say they have access to pre 1900 records if i can give details of the names i am interested in she will have a look as i am in England.
I have emailed her now so i will let you know how i get on.
Regards

Re: Secession Church Records
Further to my last posting - I had a reply tonight from the archivist at the Mitchell Library - with results!
I now have to think what i can do with the info now!I mentioned on the telephone that we had a database of pre-1855 baptisms from the seceding churches and which therefore do not appear on the Old Parish Registers. I searched this for the children and have had success! Details are taken from the records of Partick United Secession Church (ref CH3/1267/24) and are as follows:
Child: Dugald
Father: Dugald McFarlane, Sawyer, Meadows
Mother: Margaret Christie
Baptism: 21/8/1842
Birth: 11/8/1842
Child: Margaret
Father: Dugald McFarlane, Sawyer, Thompson's Buildings, West End
Mother: Margaret Christie
Baptism: 19/5/1844
Birth: 28/4/1814
Child: James
Father: Dugald McFarlane, Sawyer, Bruce Place
Mother: Margaret Christie
Baptism: 14/6/1846
Birth: 3/6/1846
Child: Dugald
Father: Dugald McFarlane, Sawyer
Mother: Margaret Christie
Baptism: 28/8/1848
Birth: 2/8/1848
Child: Elizabeth
Father: Dugald McFarlane
Mother: Margaret Christie
Baptism: 11/8/1850
Birth: 25/7/1850
Child: Helen Stewart
Father: Dugald McFarlane, Sawyer, Bruce Place
Mother: Margaret Christie
Baptism: 25/7/1852
Birth: 4/7/1852
Child: John
Father: Dugald McFarlane, Sawyer, Bruce Place, Partick
Mother: Margaret Christie
Baptism: 14/5/1854
Birth: 15/4/1854
I presume Dugald, born 1842, must have died before the second Dugald was born in 1848. Unfortunately, there are no burial / death records within the records of Partick United Secession Church so I'm unable to check for his death.
