I have an address as "Kingswood" Craigerook Road, Blackhall, Edinburgh which was the home address of Thomas Snailum in 1912. Google Earth does not have the house, just Craigerook Rd, can any one suggest where I might look for an image or further information on Kingswood,
The house was first lived in by Tom's father who was the Chief Engineer of the Infirmary, it is possible that Thomas snr built the house and named it after the village in Bristol where he was born.
kindest regards
David

Hi David
I suspect it's Craigcrook Road you want.
Try looking online for an Edinburgh Post Office Directory for around 1920. I had a quick look in the 1931-32 version, but no luck there. Craigcrook Road is not listed in 1913.

The 1920/21 Directory has a Tom Snailum , engineer, residing at 32 Torphicen Street Edinburgh but there doesn't seem to be a listing for Craigerook or Craigcrook Road/Street/Avenue

The 1910/11 Directory also has Tom Snailum, engineer, at 32 Torphichen Street but adds House Kingswood, Blackhall with a further entry in the general directory giving the home address as Kingswood, Craigcrook Road, Blackhall.
Unfortunately there is no listing for Craigcrook Road - it is possible that it was considered to be in the suburbs at that time and therefore not part of Edinburgh proper for the Directory purposes.

Hi David,
Craigcrook Road was in Cramond Parish, which was not absorbed into the City of Edinburgh until 1920.
All the best,
AndrewP

Hi David,
Craigcrook Road is in the "County Directory" section of the 1911-1912 Post Office Directory for Edinburgh. It can be found on page 806 (in the section for Blackhall):
Snailum, Tom, Kingswood, Craigcrook Road
http://www.archive.org/stream/postoffic ... 6/mode/2up
Use the magnifier to enlarge the print, and then scroll to the bottom left of the double-page shown.
On looking at the various old street maps of that area on http://www.old-maps.co.uk there is no sign of Kingswood amongst the named properties on Craigcrook Road. Same on the "Godfrey Edition" Murrayfield and Blackhall map of 1894, which I have a copy of here.
All the best,
AndrewP

Re: Locating a Prorerty
Tom Snailum is listed in the 1926/27 Directory and is still listed at 32 Torphichen Street but interestingly is now also listed as a JP (possibly Justice of the Peace - a magistrate).
Just to confuse things a little this directory has a Mrs Jane Fordyce listed as the occupant of Kingswood, Craigcrook Road (Kingswood is the third named property in the list Anneville, Gidda, Kingswood - the list does not appear to be listed alphabetically).

Hi David,
32 Torphicen Street looks to have been demolished and replaced by office blocks.
