Richard,

A birth/baptism in 1736 is getting you back pretty close to the start of written records in Scotland. Where did you find the information that James Dickson was born in Melrose that year?

While the records for Melrose go back to the 1600s, according to the General Register Office (see here: http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/files1/f ... 8to811.pdf) it's quite likely that not all events were recorded ~ and nearby parishes in many cases don't start their records until after 1736.

There are also some details about what exists at the GENUKI page for Melrose: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/ROX/Melrose/index.html ~ includes a link to an out of copyright book that transcribed the early registers for Melrose.

Hope this helps!

Hi B.J. Sorry this has taken me so long to get back to you. My information on the birth of James Dickson b 1736 is from a citation from the Roxburghshire Scotland Extracted Perish Records. I got this off of my Ancestry.com site. He (I think) is the father of George Dickson b 1760 married to Anne Manners. Their son was John Dickson born 1788 who is my ancestor.
Any help on 1. some history on James b 1736 Melrose, Roxburgh Perish and George Dickson's b 1760 death date would really help. Thanks again! Richard
