Does this look like your Beatties? (all found on the online IGI)

Extracted from the OPRs:
  • GILBERT BEATTIE / JANET RICHARDSON
Marriage: 25 FEB 1848 Dumfries, Dumfries, Scotland
The IGI also shows a sumbitted entry for this couple on the same date, at Durrisdeer, Dumfriessshire.

Extracted from the OPRs:
  • ELISABETH BEATTIE - Birth: 05 SEP 1855 Applegarth, Dumfries
Extracted from the statutory birth registers:
  • ELIZABETH BEATTIE - Birth: 30 AUG 1855 Applegarth, Dumfries
ROBERT BEATTIE - Birth: 24 JUN 1857 Applegarth, Dumfries
MARGARET WALLS BEATTIE - Birth: 25 JAN 1860 Applegarth, Dumfries
JANET BEATTIE - Birth: 29 AUG 1865 Applegarth, Dumfries
LDS submissions:
  • JAMES ARMSTRONG BEATIE - Christening: 14 JUL 1850 Kirkmichael, Dumfries
THOMAS BEATTIE - Birth: 06 APR 1853 Applegarth, Dumfries
ROBERT BEATTIE - Birth: 1855 Applegarth, Dumfries, Scotland
WILLIAM BEATTIE - Birth: 12 APR 1863 Applegarth, Dumfries
You will need to search the censuses to untangle the truth fom this lot. The LDS submissions would have you belive there were more children than show up in the records.

The statutory birth certificates will be available on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for a fee. The 1855 birth certificate is the one to make a priority for. One useful detail that appeared uniquely on 1855 birth certificates was the amount of children of each sex already born to the parents, and how many of these were still living at the time of the 1855 birth.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

A parent search of the IGI gives these birth extracts to Gilbert Beattie and Janet Richardson:

Elizabeth 1855
Margaret Walls 1860
Janet 1865

All born Applegarth, Dumfries.

There are some male submissions but no Gilbert. If this is them then a look at Elizabeth's birth extract on SP will give you ages and places of birth of parents.

Here is Gilbert with daughter Janet in 1881:

Hi to all & thanks for the information on Gilbert.
I am now more confused,.if Gilbert married Janet Richardson, she would have been 29 yrs of age.I also see that the name Janet is spelt that way & the information that I have is that it was spelt Jannet. This I obtained from the 1851 census thanks to nelmit.
Does any one know where Jannet was born ?????

Hello Baldy,

Don't worry too much about spelling of Jannet/Janet. They can also be know as Jane, Jean, Jeannie, Jessie.
According to the 1851 census she was born in Closeburn, Dumfries approx 1819.

The answer to that is given in that online 1851 census. On that census, she declared that she was born in Closeburn, Dumfries-shire.

All the best,

Birth: 14 MAY 1818 Closeburn, Dumfries, Scotland
