Why is it that when I put in
Surname Gebbie
First name William
Sex Male
Spouse Mary Crie
All Parishes
1820-1830
I come up with the marriage in 1824 William Wilson Gebbie/Mary Crie
When I reverse the order by putting
Surname Crie
First name Mary
Sex Female
Spouse William Gebbie
All parishes
1820 -1830
I get no result.
Does this create a problem if you only have the name of the female.

Re: searching
Hello Wini,
what is being searched for in Spouse's name is exactly what you typed in, enclosed by quotes, i.e. a search for a string of characters within another string. Therefore the search will be on "William Gebbie" and not "William Wilson Gebbie". To a computer, these are not the name. In this case, less is more, because a search using just "Gebbie" finds the marriage.
Incidentally, wildcards do not work in the spouse's name field because it is a string search, i.e. William*Gebbie does not work. The help offered with this should be better, and I will send a message to SP about it.
Regards,
John

I tried both ways and they worked fine.
Kind regards,
Annette M
I've just read John's post - when I searched for Crie Mary, female I just put Gebbie in the spouse box.

Thanks John & Annette
I didn't use the middle name but I did put in the full name william Gebbie in the spouse box.
I was trying to cut down the options
I realise now that is not a good idea and that will probably help with some others..wini
