Am I right to assume that if I order an OPR extract from ScotlandsPeople for £10 it may only give me the names of the bride and groom? That there is no guarantee that I will be able to establish their parents' names from this?
The marriage took place in Lasswade in Nov 1842. The groom's (James Harper) death certificate from 1891 does not name his parents even though his son was the informant.
Therefore how can I establish who his parents were? How safe is it to rely on the IGI?
How should I proceed?
Sorry there are rather a lot of questions there but I'm new to the OPR!

Hello
I'm afraid you are correct in that the OPR marriage certificate will likely not give you parent's names. The odds are that it won't. If you are handy to Edinburgh then you could visit NRH and look up the record for yourself and take a transcription. If you're not (like me
) I've always found it more cost effective to pay a researcher to obtain a transcription for me.....ie...it's always been less that the £10
....and the two records I've received this way didn't state parents names
Good luck!
Best wishes
Jean

One of James and Hannah's children was born in 1855, If you haven't done so already you should look at the entry on SP. While this will not give you James's parents names it will tell you his age and place of birth which may help when the early census records come on line.
I've tried searching FREECEN (where I found Hannah) but haven't had any luck with James yet (FREECEN seems to hate the name James).
Hope this is the right family.
You searched for: Father: James Harper, Mother: Hannah Dobbie
Exact Spelling: Off
International Genealogical Index / British Isles - 3
1. MARGARET HARPER - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 06 NOV 1855 Cleish, Kinross, Scotland
2. BARBARA HARPER - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 26 APR 1858 Cleish, Kinross, Scotland
3. AGNES HARPER - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 19 JUL 1860 Cleish, Kinross, Scotland
Kind regards,

...............5 minutes later - Maybe you have this but I think I found him on the 1841 census living in Cleish but not with his parents. Was he a sawyer?

Hello Annette,
Yes I do have that. I too have been unable to find James' family on the 1841 census, but yes that is him (I think) as a sawyer in Cleish in 1841.
I believe James was born in Inveresk - that's what it says on his daughter's (1855) birth certificate and there is a James Harper on the OPR for there at the right time. Would I be better getting his birth extract?
Regards,
Meg
