Manners/Ferguson research-year 1657 .....

Post by Elaine » Sat Mar 04, 2006 8:11 pm

Would appreciate any suggestions on how to collect information on my 7x grt.grandparents who lived in the year 1657. What sources could I try? Ilive in the United States and have no clue where to begin a scotland search for that year. I have been at this for 2years,so have been to many sites, but all are dead-ends. All I have is their marriage date of July 7,1677 and 2 of their childrens names. I have only old family rumors to go on. Their names are: Alexander Manners b.abt.1657 and Isabell Ferguson b.abt.1656. LDS site lists Tranent,East Lothian as the place the marriage took place. Any help would be very welcome--Thanks

Hi Elaine,

Welcome to TalkingScot.

There are Old Parochial Registers (OPRs) for Tranent going back to 1611 and this is where the 1677 marriage of Alexander Manners and Isabell Ferguson is found.

Unfortunately, their births are "submitted to the LDS" entries on the IGI, rather than extracted from the records. That usually means there is no means of verifying the information. It may be good, or it may be someone's estimate - you may never find out and that is where the trail runs cold.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Thankyou for your information. I have found many inaccurate entries on the LDS site and, for the most part, use it sparingly. I fear my "trail" will always run cold, but my obsession with Scotland and my ancestry there will keep me going and going--- Thanks--Elaine

Surely there must be some family connections amongst this group of people but it would be a monumental task to sort them out and look for lines.....but then....isn't that what genealogy is all about  !

Actually I'm feeling quite jealous that you've managed to find a direct link to Scottish records from this era. That is quite an accomplishment!!!

Best wishes
Jean

Annette M's information for Elaine

Post by Elaine » Sun Mar 05, 2006 9:50 pm

Hi Annette,
Thanks for your reply. What you gave me was a big help----the connection between the last name of Manners and Mariners is one I have been trying to prove for months. Also the "Aberlady" reference on the marriage date is important because I have found Manners there, but disregarded them because there was no connection to Aberlady at that time. Thanks to you I will go back to that now with fresh hope. Elaine

To Jean about her information for Elaine.

Post by Elaine » Sun Mar 05, 2006 10:09 pm

Hi Jean,
There are many of these Manners names who I believe are connected to my line-I have came upon them before- however, I have yet to prove it. There is also the family tale that we were originally named Menzies and came through France-I have yet to find proof of that-to England where the Manners name was born.
I wish I could take credit for the actual original information of my ancestor in 1657,but alas, I can't. This comes from a relative who wrote a book on the Manners and won't give any info about the family to anyone. Must buy the book,if you can find it. Sooooo--I am looking for my own proof of this beginning. The one concrete proof I have is the names in the line. There are many names missing yet,but each one leads back and back so I know Alexander Manners was in Scotland in 1657,but I have no Idea yet where he was. I have filled in many children on my own and will keep digging. Thanks for your help! Elaine

What a pity about your mercenary relative. As they say you can pick your friends but not your relatives :D

Just think of it this way, you have done a considerable amount of research yourself, without said relatives help. So perhaps you can return the favour (not)

Well done I doubt if I will ever get back as far as you have.

To Stewie from Elaine

Post by Elaine » Mon Mar 06, 2006 3:43 pm

Hello Stewie,
How kind of you to make such an encouraging reply!
I am a novice in Genealogy, but I have discovered that ANY seemingly small or far connected bit of information can lead to a major find. I have connected children in my line not listed by using the Scottish naming pattern and then running thru thousands of names on the LDS site until----FOUND! parents with that child listed. Again--thanks for your reply,and---Have hope----It's all out there waiting to be discovered!

Hi Elaine

That's a very neat encouragement to all researchers to "keep on truckin' " in terms of following up every last little bit of info, which, on a surprisingly good number of occasions, will eventually lead to such a positive outcome :!: :D

David

PS Pity about the mercenary relative
