Hi Heather
Sorry no-one has taken you up on this post.
We had relatives in Old Cumnock and quite franckly IGI was, for once, no help at all.
We found masses of mis-transcriptions and began to wonder if the transcriber had even the basics of the English language.
The effective solution eventually was to sit in front of a microfiche viewer in the Cumnock library and work through page after page of entries. We found them all eventually.
It was coincidental that we were in Cumnock that day as we had been looking for MIs in the Old Cemetery.
Your nearest source would mean a Xmas shopping day in Inverness being spent going cross-eyed at a screen. Worth it in the end though.
One cautionary not though. Not everyone was Church of Scotland so there are gaps in the records for some families.

Hello Russell
Thanks for your reply but Iam lucky that my local Heritage Centre has microfiche for Scotland and I can look at them there. I have already been making searches on some of the family names so this will be another to add to the list.

Could it possibly be Janet Crawford instead of McCowan? She married a John McClatchie in 1770 in Old Cumnock, and they had a son Robert. See:
http://freepages.misc.rootsweb.com/~dat ... ATCHIE.htm
However, it does say that Robert emigrated to Canada, so that might not fit your family history.
I've just discovered that McLatchie site. This John McLatchie and Janet Crawford are ancestors of mine.
Mind you, it's a weird site. The incredibly convoluted and pompous sentences, the lack of sources - especially when making incredible claims like that the McLatchie were one of:
'several closely allied Ayrshire families who were represented and participated in the company led by the Chief of Clan Sinclair to the New World in defence of the secrets of Zion, about a century before it was supposedly "discovered" by Columbus. Family members continued for many centuries to safeguard these holy mysteries, which naturally resulted in a not-unfavourable relationship with the Imperial Crown of these Realms, which lay at the centre and apex of it all, and around which all else revolved.'
