OPR Indexes.....

Post by karenc » Thu Jan 18, 2007 9:58 pm

Hi all

i was at the mitchell the other day where i was looking at the index cards for births and marriages

now i found a marriage i was looking for but it had two frame nos

FRCH2V9 and
FR555

Also i found a birth which had two frame nos
FR487 and
FRCH2V9

So, what i want to know is why would they both have the no FRCH2V9 and where would this entry be found, and would it have any other info on it?

"FRCH2V9" is a reference to the fact that the info is taken from the kirk session records held at National Archives of Scotland, the "2V9" bit referring to a particular, common kirk session record.

FR555 and FR487 are frame number references to the relevant microfilm of the OPR concerned.

Hi Karen
CH2 = Church of Scotland Church records held at NAS, so the ones you are looking for are probably Kirk Session minutes. At some point these will be online - many are digitised and availble to view on the PCs at NAS.

If a birth turned up the the Kirk Session minutes, it may imply that the child was illegitimate and the CH2 entry would refer to the mother and possibly also the father being brought before the session to answer for their "wrongdoing".

If a marriage is mentioned in the Kirk Session Minutes it might imply that:
a. the couple had been irregularly married and had been found out!
b. the couple were either irregulalry married OR not married at all and had had a child and now wished to be married in the eyes of the Kirk.

I think you'd really need to see the original entires to find out the circumstances.
Best wishes
Lesley

.....snipped ............

Lesley
It's unlikely that the digitised images of the kirk session records will come on line in anything less than 2 years from now ..........

In the meantime the digitised images can be viewed at NAS.

Some Kirk Session books contain accounts that record the payment made to the minister to contract for the wedding, as opposed to the details of the marriage itself, which will appear in the marriage register. I have many examples of this from the records in both the Perth kirk session books and registers, for example.
