Dinn or Dunn.....

Post by smiddykilry » Thu Feb 01, 2007 5:08 pm

Hello
I have an OPR Marriage Jan 1826 in Ferry Port O Craig of a William Dinn and Isabella Dutch, they have a son William Dinn. Nov 1826 they go on to have James Dunn abt 1828, Elizabeth Dun 1831 and David Dunn 1835. I have checked census marriage and death records and they all appear as Dunn but my question is why the name change ? could it just be accent.

Smid :?
Dunn, Rough, Smith, Bruce, Paterson, Paton. Wylie,
Stewart, Reid, Gardiner, Rollo, Turner, Dutch, Laing, Forsyth, Robb, Hardie.
Kennedy, Kandow, Winter, Vollum, Hastie.

Hi Smid

It could be the accent or it could have been mis transcribed.

I wouldn't worry too much over the spelling, especially when it concerns a vowel. You should see some of the howlers I've come across!

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Smid,

I agree with Jean Jeanie. Some of my Morning family are listed as Manning and Morrow.

I think it was mentioned in another post that ministers very often didn't come from the areas they worked in, so between the accent problem, and the fact that a lot of their parishioners were illiterate, I'd imagine it must have been quite difficult to get it right.

It's not just the surnames either. I have a couple with a whean of kids, but mother's first name is altered slightly each time. If you say each one out loud, the spelling actually matches! My problem is deciding which one is correct.

Hi Smid
You probably know this anyway, but just incase not....Ferry Port On Craig is now known as Tayport. (Blame the railway company in 1851 for the loss of the more interesting name....!)

er... I remember the "pre-roadbridge" days and taking the ferry across the Tay....

Best wishes

Hi Smid

I have the same problem with some of my ancestors. They start out as Din, change to Dun, and then to Dunn. Further back I think the name is spelt Dyn. Whenever I make a search for them on SP, I put the name as D*n*.

I have the name Dun in my family & was rather amazed to see on the Dun website http://www.dun.org.uk/2007/2007.htm between 1841 and 1901 the number of folks named DUN went from 491 to 74, while the name DUNN went from 2626 to 5020. Guess folks preferred 2 Ns :D or most of the single Ns came to Australia :D

Hi
Many thanks for all the replies, I have had the info on this marriage for a while but only had a look at the image after they came on line at SP and to see Dinn so clearly was a surprise as I had been expecting a hard to read Dunn. I take note of what you say about name changes (I have some Mac’s or Mc’s that were lost along the way)
All the Best
Smidd

PS. LesleyB
I also remember the Ferry from Dundee to Fife (Fifie) and can just about remember crossing on it I think on the way to St Andrews beach Brrrrrrrr 8)
