Uploading OPR images prob.....

Post by Dennis » Thu Feb 15, 2007 9:47 pm

Hi:)

I downloaded the image from SP of the birth record of furthest back of my line. However, I can't get it uploaded for assistance in reading it; gives me an error message regarding a possible server problem.
Is it just something I'm doing wrong?

Hi Dennis,

The file was too large for the gallery as a tif of approximately 7Mbytes. I converted it back to a jpg format, the same format as the normal OPR download from ScotlandsPeople. That was of a size acceptable to the Gallery.

http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... ?pos=-1047

From the file name, I take it you are looking for a William Lennox, indexed as 16-June-1618. The first challenge will be to work out which entry on the page is for him. Then the deciphering starts.

The IGI has the parents transcribed as:

Father: DANIELL LENNOX
Mother: MASSIE HAMILTOUN

All the best,

AndrewP

WOW :!: Dennis

That is some challenge.
It is full of youghs, thorns and abbreviations.
I still haven't found William yet :(

While I don't think I'll be able to help it will keep me puzzling for weeks.
We don't appear to have a 'resident expert' in Secretary Hand here on Talking Scot but we have puzzled out some documents in the past but- hey! -this is the oldest one I've tackled so far.

Thanks for posting it.

Hi Dennis
The Header says 16-6-1618 but the entries look like Sept 1618 and Oct 1618.
Does the first one say This Day 25th Sept 1618
I can also see 27th Sept 1618
2nd Oct 1618
4th Oct 1618 also 6thOct and 9th Oct 1618
So far can't make out a Lennox name it sure is a hard one for you.

Dennis

I have done a fair bit of transcribing hand written entries for Free BMD, but all I can say is guid luck son. Looking at this image just shows how much I dont know about handwriting.

Hi Dennis,

I agree with Rita (and a non-member who contacted me) that there is no sign of the William Lennnox baptism on that page. The baptism dates are all for later in the year. Some of the entries show the birth date, and I cannot match any of them to the date in the header section of the image. As much as I squint or stare into the secretary hand writing on that page, I cannot see his name in there.

I think you should go back to the ScotlandsPeople website and complete a contact form saying that you believe the wrong page is given for this record. They should send you a copy of the correct page. That will be a new challenge, but it will be a head start if the record is at least on the page given.

And StewL, on this basis, it may not be that your spectacles are wearing out, or that your reading of secretary hand or obscure handwriting is failing you.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi:)

Did as suggested and sent off a contact form. BTW was it common back then for only the father's name to be recorded?

Hello Dennis

I think it is common for only the father to be named. Based on a number of peoples comments on this subject in the past. Although I am far from being an expert on the subject, someone with superior knowledge may come along and give you the correct answer.

Today I had a good run of getting OPR's for my lot of lang deid punters, and I found the first one today that actually had the brides fathers name on the OPR "daughter of the deceased ..." I must say I was a bit chuffed as it was a 1791 marriage/banns. :D But as you would know OPR marriages/banns are a bit of pot-luck in what is on them. So far I havent got a OPR birth, havent actually looked for one yet.
