Edward Cunninghame and Jannet Hill.....

Post by Jean Jeanie » Sat Feb 17, 2007 9:24 pm

Have uploaded this OPR to the gallery.

It is with regard to the second entry. Edward Cunninghame and Jannet Hill.

What does the word "teflifreal" mean? Even transposing "s" for "f" doesn't help me.

Hi Jean
I think it is Testificat - my guess would be that as they seem to be from a different parish, the Kirk Session in Queensferry has requested a letter of proof from the minister of Dalmenie [sic] that they were married before christening the child.
Not much got past the kirk sessions!!

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Jean,

Following Lesley's lead ... off to Chambers Dictionary.

Testificate - (Scots law) a solemn written assertion

All the best,

It looks like something relating to 'testifying' and 'certificate'! I get the sense that's what it means - 'testificaiton' or 'testificatn' (or 'testificale') so that this minister says they are actually married before baptising the child.

'Irregular' marriage that was regularised at this time?

Btw, I'm interested that you have Dalmeny and Queensferry people - me too (on the other side from the Linlithgow ones!) :)

I've posted a bit about them just now over in the 'Scottish People' forum.

Probably nothing irregular about their marriage.

Looks like they married in Dalmeny, but had moved to Queensferry by the birth/baptism of the child, but the minister wanted to see their "marriage lines" from Dalmeny, this being the Teƒtificate referred to.

David mentioned irregular marriages in the previous post, I had a nice wee day yesterday getting OPR's for my lang deid punters :D :D

On the July collections Banns 1793 Airdrie/New Monkland, there is a couple on the list John Mathison and Margaret Walker who paid 3/6 "for their irregular marriage"

Funnily they are the entry after my couple James Walker and Jean Bruce, I must contact a distant cousin to see if there is a link.
