More than one Record.....
When there are more than one OPR Marriage records in different Parish, what is the best one to view: will they both have the same info?
Researching- Clark from Polmont, Wason from Dailly, Anderson & Williamson from Bridgeton, also Thomson, Sharp, Bryce, Gillen & Fairley

To quote others...
Mibbees Aye, mibbees Naw!
The amount of information is down to the method used in each parish. Some only gave the basic facts. Others can be very informative.
I tend to work on the principle that if the first one I view is just the bare facts, then I will give the second one a go.
If the first one tells me enough, I don't bother with the other one. I only broke that rule once when one parish was so good that I could not resist looking to see if the other one was equally informative. It was, and I gleaned an amazing amount of information between the two!
Now that I've totally muddied the waters
The OPR's are bit of a lottery as far as information goes

Has anybody come across a minister using a pocket book to record marriages in different parts of his parish and then recording them up in the main record book. I ask this because I have two completely different records for the same marriage, on the same day , in the same parish (not banns because the list of other couples and dates are exactly the same and in the same order on both sheets, except the wording (mainly place names) and spacing is different. This is my couple.
Record 1: Heading: 12/01/1821 - Bone, Margaret, (OPR marriages) (838 0030 0104) Kirkpatrick Juxta, Dumfries
1821
Jany 12th - John Moffat - Craiglands - Margaret Bone - Craiglands (ruled columns - entry half way down the page)
Record 2: Heading: 12/01/1821 - Bone, Margaret (OPR marriages) (838 0030 0111), Kirkpatrick Juxta, Dumfries
1821
Jany 12th Wanlockhead John Moffat & Margaret Bone.
The records on sheet 2 are written straight across the page and this entry is right at the bottom with something illegible squeezed in under “Wanlockhead”. Not another marriage as there are only two words. The entries on this second sheet all have crosses against them, as if the minister was marking them off as he entered them in the “proper” book.
PS - anyone any ideas where Craiglands was?

'Googling' Craiglands I found a family history which said ........... was a tenant farmer of "Craiglands", near Moffat, Dumfries-shire. However looking at www.maps.google.co.uk shows it near Ecclefechan, south of Lockerbie. It's the same on www.streetmap.co.uk. Do any of these make sense?Grendlsmother wrote:

Records were rarely written directly in the actual book containing the parochial records.
A pocket book is good to hear being mentioned, as it's known that odd scraps of paper were even used by some ministers or session clerks.
At regular intervals, the minister or the session clerk would engross (great old Scots word), - copy, - these notes into what we know today as the OPR books.
In some parishes this would happen on a frequent and regular basis; in others, less frequently and not on such a regular basis.
Depending also on the quality of the original notes, then the longer the time interval, the greater the chance of error creeping in
As in so many other cases the records aren't perfect, not least because they were created by fallible folk.

I don't actually know that it was a pocket book but guessed it must have been something of the sort. Judging by the entries, I think the book recorded the place of marriage - only one location is named. In the "proper" entry, a location is given after each name - and for each couple one or both of them is different from the entry in the "book". Hope that makes sense. Its great though that both records have been preserved and indexed. I had my couple on the IGI as being married at Kirkpatrick Juxta - now I can assume that the actual marriage took place at Wanlockhead and that they lived at Craiglands.
I still cannot read the bottom of the page, two words squeezed under Wanlockhead. I have posted it to the Gallery - awaiting approval.

PS thanks for the tips about possible locations of Craiglands.
