Peters and Fettes 1795 Aberdeenshire

Post by Maggie64 » Sun Apr 29, 2007 12:37 pm

Hello everyone
Here is Maggie from Canada, I need your help! I was doing research on www.familysearch.org to find my gggg grandparents John Peters and Agnes Fettes/Fettas. I found them that they were married on August 23 1795 in Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire.

But the problem is that Agnes was born in 1786, that she would be 9 years old when she got married. I felt that she was too young to be bride at that time. These records must be wrong but her death was on January 8 1864 in Aberdeen aged 78. What do you think about these records?

My ggg grandmother was born in Aberdeen on June 4 1820. Please check out these records for me. Thank you so much.

Hi Maggie

Using an age at death to calculate the year of birth is risky. Often times the informant just didn't know exactly how old the deceased was and they estimated it. This might be contributed to by the deceased taking years off their age as they grew older!!! It would be best to check on the ages given for Agnes on the census records taken when she was alive....so 1841, 1851, and 1861 and note what those ages are stated as. It may be that she was older than 78 in 1864.

You of course also have to be certain the marriage in Pitsligo in 1795 is really your couple. Do you know of other siblings to your ggggrandmother and their birth years and places? That information is necessary to help confirm you have located the correct marriage.

Best wishes
Jean

Peters and Fettes 1795 Aberdeenshire

Hi again,
Here is information that I got from distant cousin that she came from same family as mine.

Alexandrina was born in about 1813-1814.

Jane was born on Dec 24 1814.

James was born on 7 October 1814 ( I have noticed that she put down the same year as Jane's birth year as James's birth year ).

Susan (my ggg grandmother) was born on June 4 1820

Alexander was born on 18 October 1821

John was born on 24 August 1823

another John was born Jan 10 1826 All of them born in Aberdeen.

Alexandrina was married to James Farquhar on 12 March 1836 in Aberdeen. She died on 10 Sept 1884 in Aberdeen.

That is what she wrote down also she said that Agnes Fettes was born in Dundee in about 1785/1786 (according to the 1851 census).

Yes my ggg grandmother died on August 13 1889 aged 68 years old in Aberdeen and she was buried at Nellfield cemetery. She was married to James Brannen.

Hope that will help you for information on the Peters family.

Maggie :)

Hi Maggie

I've looked quickly and I think you've steered yourself wrong with the date of marriage you've given. I'm not finding any marriage in Pitsligo 23 August 1795. There is however a very promising looking double entry in 1812....

02/05/1812 PETER JOHN AGNES FIDDES/ M St Vigeans /ANGUS 319/ 0030 0075
29/04/1812 PETER JOHN AGNES FIDDES/FR1239 M Arbroath /ANGUS 272/ 0050 0163

These are not informative OPR entries but do state John was of Arbroath and Anges of St. Vigeans. By the age at death this would make Agnes be in her 20's....a much more realistic marrying age.

Best wishes
Jean
