Proclamation of banns/mariage

Post by davran » Mon Jun 04, 2007 6:07 pm

My ancestors "booked their names for proclamation previous to marriage" on 19th April 1783 in Renfrew. On the same page there are other couples who did the same, but have the addition of "& married (date)".

I was just curious as to why some had the actual marriage date and others didn't. Obviously one reason would be that the marriage didn't take place, but I'm pretty sure my lot did as they went on to produce 9 children.
Researching: KNOX of Renfrew. Also FORSYTH, MCFARLANE, MCINDOE, BENNIE, HUTCHISON, HENDERSON

Hi

Kirk Sessions were usually the Elders of the Kirk and were just that - Old Men.; subject to the vagaries of memory lapses that we all are prone to. I think sometimes they just forgot to update their records not thinking that they would cause confusion in the ranks 100 years later.

Hi Davran,

Have you seen the OPRs for the births of the 9 children? If so, were they stated as "lawfully" born (legitimate) or "naturally" born (illegitimate)? In particular, was the first child lawfully born? It was not uncommon for child #1 to make an appearance before the marriage.

All the best,

AndrewP
