Hello
Reg from Canada here.
I am doing research on my family and have come to a block. I am looking for information on John Dryden spouse is either Catherine Higgie as shown in their Son's (David Anderson Dryden born Scotland 1827 ) OPR birth record. or could be Cathrine Heggie ? This is where I run into the wall. I have been using Scotlands people and The Latter day saints site for most of the info. I am hoping I just need a little info to get back on track if any one can assist.
David Anderson Dryden married Euphemia Lees in 1851 and immigrated to Canada sometime between 1851 and 1871.

Hi Reg & welcome to TalkingScot. My first thought would be to look for your David on the 1851,1861&1871 Censuses. You may find this on Freecen or Scotlands People. This would help to pinpoint when he went to Canada & if he is at home you may find other family members there too.
Which area did he come from?Do you know where he was living before he emigrated?Try for either parent but as their age is unknown may be a little trickier. You could try the areas you are expecting to find them & then narrow or expand your perimeters depending on what you do or don't find.
Don't use his middle name in your search & I would use wildcards in the spelling to give you the best chance for the least outlay-we are canny with our cash us Scots!
Have you tried a search here on TS to see if others are researching Drydens-I am sure there are & who knows you might find a connection!

Hi Reg
Did you run a parent search on the IGI yet? I ask as when doing so there is only one result for David and Euphemia.....and it's an 1855 birth
EUPHEMIA LEES DRYDEN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 17 APR 1855 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
It would be well worth your while to purchase a view of this record on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and see if it holds any interesting facts. If you've already done this....just ignore me
Oh...and Heggie/Higgie I would say could easily be the same person being recorded with variable spellings.
Best wishes
Jean

Joette re :Dryden
Hopefully I am replying correctly bieng new at this and All. Thanks for your response.
David A. Dryden I have a fairly good handle on during the 1851 census he lived in Cupar with the Lees family at 35 Castle St. I'm pretty sure of the John and Catherine Part. So guess I'll try searching TS and IGI
Thanks
Reg

Hi Jean
Thanks for the info, The Female Dryden appears to be part of my family and I will continue on IGI and a couple of other that I have.
I have found David's birth area in Forfarshire,Dundee so I'll give that a shot for finding more on his father John
Thanks again
Reg

If you want to check out the 1871 Ontario Census at this site:
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivi ... 803_e.html
There are 3 John Dryden listed as head of household.
If you check out the 1901 and 1911 Canadian census at
http://automatedgenealogy.com/index.html
They often list the year of immigration, if you scrolll the page far enough to the right.
Hope this of some help
Regards

Thankyou for your assistance. Where I run into the wall though is in Scotland I'm trying to find the next Link after John and Cathrine this is what I have (and back 2 more generation to mayself
David Reginald Dryden (B 1887 Ont.) Wife Teena May Gosnell (B 1884 Ont.)
David A Dryden (B 1859 Ont) wife Ruth Donaldson (B 1863 Ont)
David Anderson Dryden(B 1827 Scotland) wife Euphemia Lees (B 1828 Scotland
John Dryden (Scotland) wife Cathrine Heggie (sometimes shown as Higgie)
At this point I can't seem to find any leads to go further.
May have to see if I can find a Dryden Family book and see if it covers this particular Dryden line
Thanks again

Hi there
Doing a parent search on the IGI produces the following children for John and Catherine:
David Anderson Dryden b 19/10/1827 bap 24/10/1827 Dundee
William Dryden 26/8/1831 bap 13/9/1831 Dundee
Agnes Dryden 13/12/1835 bap 17/1/1836 Dundee
Fullarton Dryden 26/10/1829 bap 10/1/1830 Dundee
These all have mother's name as Higgie
John Dryden 1/10/1822 bap 24/10/1822 Dundee
Robert Haggie Dryden 6/12/1824 bap 9/1/1825 Dundee
Isabella Dryden 23/6/1838 bap 8/7/1838 Dundee
These all show mother's name as Heggie
John Dryden and Cathrine Higgie were married on 27/11/1821 at Falkland, Fife. The OPR gives little info except that they are both parishioners.
Ancestry gives the following in the 1841 census which I'm pretty sure is the family:
John Dryden Lapper 42 born out of county
Catheren Dryden 35 born out of county
John Dryden 15 Dundee
David Dryden 12 Dundee
William Dryden 8 Dundee
Agnes Dryden 5 Dundee
Isabella Dryden 3 Dundee
James Dryden 4 weeks Dundee
They are much harder to trace in the 1851 and I suspect both John and Catherine are dead by the stage.
As you say David is with the Lees family.
I thought I had found some of the others with an unmarried aunt in Dundee called Margaret Dryden aged 66 born Strathmore, Forfarshire but I'm not sure it's them. There might be a connection so you probably should not dismiss it altogether at this stage.
That Margaret dies in the poor house aged 85 in 1870 and her parents are given as William Dryden weaver deceased and Agnes m.s. Morris.
Euphemia Lees gives her place of birth as Creich, Fife and on the IGI there is a Ketty Heggie born in 1803 in Creich to a David Heggie and Isobel Marr. This same couple, this time as Higgie have a Euphan born 21 Oct 1794 in Flisk, Fife so I think that is a pretty good lead for Catherine. Sadly Euphemia seems to have died before 1855. Your family have a David and Isabella.
Keep picking at this one and I think it will come loose.
Anne
