Back again Carol,
Most of the Times hits were for George and were just a list of company directors. I searched for “Clerihew and Scotland” and the only possibly useful thing I found was a notice from a Firm of Edinburgh Agents published 4th & 10th August, 1857. I’ve OCR’d the image and cleaned up the text and that’s it at the end of this post. It probably still has some transcription errors so let me know if you want anything checked. I could post it in the Gallery (is it ok to do that with newspaper images?) or could email it to you if it’s important.
I did stumble across a legal notice published 12 July, 1944 in respect of the deceased estate of a Miss Laura Clerihew from West Worthing (I think it’s about 40 miles south of London as the crow flies). No Laura births on FreeBMD, one on SP in 1861 & only that one on the IGI.
If your Dad’s 108 year old lady’s (assuming she wasn’t exaggerating her age) name was Clerihew, and if you have access and haven’t already done so, it might be worthwhile checking the English death index images on Ancestry from say 1944 for a few years. A lady with that surname and aged in that general vicinity should stand out like a sore thumb and you shouldn’t have too many years to cover. I can’t access the thing at the moment.

I can access a whole lot of stuff free online from home through the State Library of NSW (including US newspapers listed). I suppose the library’s licence only covers this State. They actually post out the user number so they know it’s within NSW. http://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/databases/athome.cfm I can also access the Times separately via my local Regional Library website.
You don’t necessarily have to pay through the nose to get access to old newspapers. As Leslie said, it might be worth checking your Local, State or Federal Library to see if anything similar is available where you are.
There were a total of 354 hits for Clerihew in the US newspapers although some of these might be false. I’ll check these if you like if you give me an idea of the time span you’re interested in, the general localities and the main names.

Jean and Carol,
I tried the Bedfordshire Virtual Library and it’s working ok for me. You might have to start a new registration.
Full access to their online database for anyone who registers - including London Times Archive but apparently not the old US papers.
It’s easy to get lost on the site – if anyone has any difficulties try this link.
Newspaper list and Search login here
http://www.galaxy.bedfordshire.gov.uk/c ... qtype=GALE
and
Alabama Virtual Library
http://www.avl.lib.al.us/authcheck.phtml
Seems to be a ton of stuff available there but not sure about the specifics

Checked my postings this morning and had so many leads that I had to go have a second cup of coffee! Thanks to everybody again!
The Bedfordshire library site and the ancestry uk site both look good so I'll go register for both and see what turns up. The ancestry site has a two week free trial which I put off signing up for once before, but will have to now. It had four hits for Clerihew in 1944, but I couldn't open them without registering.
Also, the AVL card looks good now that I know that it exists. No problem to run down to the local library.
Alan: The two legal notices that you sent are interesting. Miss Laura lived in England, but her executors were in Aberdeen and the William Clerihew in the Australian notice was from Alford, Aberdeenshire as was his wife. Alford is where some of my earliest Clerihew records came from. I just wish these people had been a little more apt to register their births and marriages so I could find them now! Of course, with bigamy in the family, maybe they had reason to remain anonymous!
Brian: I tried again to locate Anne Clerihew Kilpatrick with the 1927 date that you gave me, but had no success! Being married to a military man, she could have been married anywhere, but that death notice in The Scotsman was for Edinburgh so the death certificate should have been on SP. The only one that came up was for 1933 and that Anne Kilpatrick wasn't a Clerihew! Another mystery.
Off to register and do some more digging!

Hi Carol,
There is a Miss L. Clerihew in the phone books 1934 - 1937.
Her address is The Bungalow, Fairmount Road, Bexhill. Telephone number Bexhill 1017.
Can't see a death for her but there are quite a few BMDs for Clerihews in England. Also a couple of family trees on Ancestry which might help you a bit.

Hi Paula,
Thanks for looking for Clerihews for me!
Alan picked up Laura Clerihew's death notice in the London Times--1944.
I've been working my way through the BMD's this morning. Turns out that I have full access to ancestry uk because I bought the global subscription to ancestry last January. The BMD's are slow work because I have a dial up internet connection. No big finds yet.
I checked the family trees on ancestry and guess what? The most useful one is the one I posted! I did find two others that cleared up some questions about other Clerihews and a few more that are private. If I want their info I have to email them. There were also over 20 family trees tracing their beginnings back to an Agnes Clerihew who was born in 1642. The funny thing is they only list one child for Agnes. I guess he must have been very prolific if all those people are decended from him! Anyway, he was born in Pennsylvania so I don't have to check those trees.

Jean: Did you ever get back into the Bedfordshire site? When I looked at it, it seemed to only be for local residents.
Alan: Which site did you get the 354 hits on Clerihew from? My avl for Alabama only has the Sunday London Times back to 1985 unless the archives are hidden away somewhere. I only got 5 hits on Clerihew with the basic search for all newspapers and all of them were about the clerihew poems.
Haven't found any big news in the BMD's yet. My other life kept getting in the way today!

If you search deaths on SP for 1927 for KILPATRICK, ANN* , there are 3 hits. There's only one for Edinburgh City.... it might be Anne Clerihew Kilpatrick. Ah'd huv a look, but ah'm aw oot o' tokens!!
Best wishes

Thanks Brian!
I had an email this morning from Hannah who had also located Ann. I was putting in too much information, but I found her this morning. Unfortunately, her death certificate gives almost no infomation on her parents. It just says her fathers last name was Clerihew. However, I did locate her daughter's birth certificate. I'm out of time though. Have to be out the door in a few minutes so later today I'll check that out and try to find a marriage date for her parents. Maybe I can get their marriage certificate and it will have Ann's parents names on it!

Yup it works. I think it maybe only works during business hours hence why I was getting the server errror messages. Not sure on that. Anyhow...it's a bit convoluted a process but you can become a library member and request a PIN number via the internet. Once you have registered in order to access the newspapers please notice on the home page along the left hand side in different color ink, there are several choices. Choose "Information and Reference". When you pause over the title, several sub-menus come up at which point choose "Newspapers Online". When you do that, the page changes and asks you to log in, which you do with your ID - (library card number) and your PIN which they have emailed you - then click Go and you're in. A new page comes up with several choices but for The Times, choose Gale Virtual Reference Library and note the assigned PASSWORD, which you will have to enter on the following page. (Still with me??) The next page has several choices but amongst them is The Times Digital Archives 1785-1985 and When you click on the link a search page comes up and you're ready to go.
Best wishes
Jean
