Hi Ailsa
Well that is a step forward! Well done.
Now what to do next ............? cup of coffee i think first
Always a wise move. Review the info you have and think carefully before planning your next line of attack!
Thinking often saves a lot of wasted time later on ...and many wasted credits too.

Best wishes

Thanks for that load of information - I will print it out and study it in more detail.

I think Flesher was like a olden day butcher. My Beveridges' tended to be in the weaving industry. Funnily everyone used to think the name meant something to do with alcohol brewing - but not one Beveridge i have researched has ever had such an occupation. Shows how myths are started.

You also picked up on another variation on it - Belverage.
Again many thanks.

Hi Ailsa,

One of those on the list is a John Beveridge, weaver, at Brucefield Feus in 1718.

If your family were weavers, it might be worth trying the Fife Archive for any records of the trade. I have done a heck of a lot of research into the Perth weaving industry and have copies of all the indentures agreed from 1594 to the late 19th C, and copies of many other books such as minute books for ther Weavers Incorporation. If the same kind of records exist for Dunfermline or Inverkeithing, they will be well worth a look.

Have a look at the online catalogue for Fife's archive at http://www.fifedirect.org.uk/topics/ind ... 3F14B400E1 - worth a shot!

Oh, and one sugar in mine please! :D

Hi Chris,

I read about the John beveridge at Brucefield Feus in 1718, how interesting if that was one of mine! the problem is although i have them as weavers later on in Dunfermline where there is a census, i haven't found anything in Inverkeithing that mentions occupations. I will keep looking of course.

Thanks again,

Ailsa

Hello Ailsa,

The Fife Family History Society has a very useful site for anyone with interests in Fife http://www.fifefhs.org

There’s a page headed Dunfermline Weavers 1596-1863 under “Records” with what appears to be the main possible Beveridge variations under a not-too-distinct heading “BEVERIDGE/BEFRIDGE/BELVARDGE/BELFRAGE/BEVERADGE/BELFARGE” but with other references to these and similar names scattered through the list. (Best to use your browsers search facility)

Here’s an interesting Google Book.
The History of Dunfermline, from the Earliest Records, Down to the Present ...
By A. Mercer 1828
http://books.google.com.au/books?id=5TnD0b_a5TEC&pg=PA1
Many references to the Weaving industry in Dunfermline but doesn’t appear to be helpful as far as Beveridge’s etc are concerned but would be interesting reading for anyone with links to the area. Probably easier to read if you download the whole book.

Just a quick note about Ancestry - I know that some libraries here in the US have subscriptions to Ancestry and other online databases. My local library system does. I have a friend who can even access her library's Ancestry subscription from home.

I once read a letter to the editor in our local paper from a woman who objected to her tax dollars being used to support the library... because she didn't have children. The woman clearly never set foot in a public library.

Hi Ailsa,

This is more modern than what you've been looking at, but I came across this entry in the passenger ship lists--the name Beveridge from Dumferline caught my eye:

Robert Beveridge 23 law clerk

Dumferline Scotland
16 Coos (?) Hynd (?)--can't quite read this

Destination: Cleveland, Ohio

Arriving: 14 Mar 1910 NY, NY

Sailed from: Glasgow

SS California

This was on Ancestry.

Hi Carol,
Sorry for not getting back sooner. I think the Robert Beveridge is another family from Dunfermline. It could be a relation but as i have all my lot in Glasgow round about the turn of the century and can trace some of them to Hartford Connecticut, i would be going off on another tangent were i to try and fit this Robert in!!
I have a thought that Jane Beveridge who sailed with the two daughters Jenny and Katie may have been going out to someone in HER family ie her maiden name. She was called Jane Mitchell and was born in 1842.
If you are looking again at the passenger lists if you can have a look for any Mitchells who sailed specifically to Boston,Mass round about the 1860s 1870s her father was David Mitchell and mother Mary.
Only if you are looking for your own reasons.
Thanks
Ailsa

Hi again,

No problem with the look ups. I know what you mean about tangents. I was looking for a Jaffray in Rhode Island and found a whole family headed for South Dakota when I noticed Robert! :o

I had a look around for David and Mary Mitchell. The only likely one I found was:

David Mitchell
B. about 1828
Arrival: 6 Jun 1853
Place of origin: Scotland
Port of Departure: Glasgow
Port of Arrival: NY

David's wife's name is given as M. age 25
His occupation is servant. Their port of arrival was New York, but several of my relatives arrived there and ended up in Rhode Island so unless you know for sure that David and Mary sailed for Boston I didn't want to rule this out right away.

The 1880 US Census has a David Mitchel living in Andover, Essex, Mass. Andover is about 15 miles north of Boston and is next door to Lowell which was a major textile center in the 1880's.

He is listed as a widower living at home born in Scotland. He has two daughters living with him--Ann 34 and Betsy 20. Both born in Scotland. Both are spinners in a flax mill.

Do you have dates of birth for David and Mary? Were there other children beside Jane?

Hi Carol,

As i have been following my Beveridge ancestor and as it led to USA i have rather been neglecting the Mitchell side. However i think i know why that is! I have just spent the last of my current credits trying to look for more info.
The only definite info i have on Jane is on her marriage cert to Thomas Beveridge 6/09/1862 in Bridgeton Glasgow. She was 20 then so her birth is around 1842. Her parents are David Mitchell cotton spinner and Mary Mitchell m.s Niblock or Nibleck. Other info is on the census in 1871 she is down as born Glasgow Lanark. She left Scotland and settled in USA. I have contacted a library there to ask if they have a death cert.

I have spent most of the morning looking for either her birth cert or the parents marriage cert but have had no luck.

Any one any tips for searches for this ?
