What a lovely suggestion, Liz. Thank you very much and I will let you know if I do come to Glasgow.
At the moment I'm reviewing things.
Yes it would be so much more convenient to come up in the vacation but of course I'm only able to come to bring my son up there! He'll be making his own way back and forth until the end of the year when a longer trip may just be possible! Perhaps I'll leave my research until then and just enjoy this one!

Is this your first to fly the nest? If so your brain might be too addled for research anyway. I'm not a great sentimentalist but even I found leaving No 1 son in Glasgow quite strange. Mind you, he was in the old unrenovated Queen Margaret Hall which was a total dive at that time (about 9 years ago). Nowadays they might have described it as retro but it was truthfully just 70s shabby.

Where is your son staying? I had many happy times at Pollock Halls. The proximity of the swimming pool made exercise easy and the equal proximity to the pubs and the chip shop made undoing the good effects even easier!!

All the best to him anyway and I'm sure he'll have a happy and productive time there.

I've heard that there is a travelodge quite near Pollock which is not too dear and recently my employers lodged us in a hotel, I think it might have been a Jury's on Market Street which was comfortable and convenient for Princes Street and the University. Don't know how much that was but they're not as a rule unco generous.

Hi Anne,

No he's not my first to fly the nest - he's my last one! And yes he's got a place in Pollock Halls! The proximity of the pool was a great attraction for him too as he's a swimmer and water polo player.

Thanks for the hotel suggestions - much appreciated.
I think I may well leave research for another occasion; after all he will be there for 4 years.

Hello All,

Just thought I'd give you all an update!
We're setting off on Saturday (that's if he ever gets packed), arriving Sunday (it's a long journey by car from here) and I'm staying two nights in Lasswade. As it happens

this is where my gt gt grandparents married so I'm going to explore all the relevant graveyards and addresses in Edinburgh and Kinross in my day and a half.
I'll save the rest for the summer trip which will again be done by car. In the meantime my son will be coming and going by train or plane!

You may be looking for Lasswade Old Parish Church. The one which is now Lasswade Parish Church was part of the United Presbyterian Church until 1929 when the UP Church united with the Church of Scotland.

It looks like the church building of Lasswade Old Parish Church has been mostly demolished, but its churchyard and burial aisle remains.

Well I'm safely back home now and son happily installed in a very nice room ( a pity that the view from his window is of a building site rather than Arthur's Seat.......!)

Tell me why it is that while I was tramping around Scottish graveyards in the pouring rain the rest of the family was basking in sunshine back home?! And why did nearly every one I visited have workmen there cutting the grass?!

Never mind I had some success and it was lovely to see all those places which had only been names until now.
Next time my visit will be carefully planned not to coincide with any public holidays ....or rain!!
