The LFHS is alive and well but they seem to be concentrating their energies on the membership and their new modern premises in Motherwell at the moment.
The website has had its problems which in the main has been fixed but it is being left as is for the foreseable future although the aim is to alter it eventually.

The LFHS is now accepting registrations from the public at large which allows free access to certain parts of their forum.

Hi Big Sanny,
Many thanks...I couldn't log on with my old address so registered again but probably won't be approved since my membership lapsed some time ago.
They've done a good job with the new site...very nice looking and it's good to have access to the forum again.
Regards,
Anne H

Yes, I read that too. However, when I tried to register, I got this message:Big Sanny wrote:The LFHS is now accepting registrations from the public at large which allows free access to certain parts of their forum.

Well, I'm not. And have no intention of becoming one. And I was lead to believe that that didn't matter on this all new board.Thank you for registering. The admin must approve your registration before you may begin to use your account, you will receive an email shortly advising you of the admins decision please note that it will only be approved if you are a financial member of Lanarkshire FHS.
Ah well, time will tell I suppose.

Re: Lanarkshire FHS
Well, I was actualy approved not long after I registered, even though my membership lapsed and I used a different user name and email address, and although I didn't try all the different links, I can certainly not only access the forum and read the posts but also made a post.
Sometimes we just need to give others a chance, unless of course we don't really want to be part of something, then it doesn't matter anyway...does it?

Anne H

Re: Lanarkshire FHS
Hmmm...well my registration was still there and when I logged in it went to a page saying "Welcome back" and "redirecting" and it took me to a 404 page - not found. I wasn't and am not going to be a financial member....
This annoys me! It was one of the first sites I went to to try and find information way back when I started this.
If it is going to be exclusive then I won't be going back there.
I suppose it was because they kept getting hacked into.
Another bookmark deleted!

Re: Lanarkshire FHS
I tried again. For only 21 Pounds (because it's November and I'm overseas - as if that should matter), I could join their site for 13 months! They aren't particularly gracious about it either; the whole tone is "take it or leave it." I'll leave it, thank-you-very-much.
I will not allow LFHS to spoil my wonderful impression of Scotland gained from from TS, SP, FFHS, Fife Council, the GRO, many individual Scots, and a personal visit.

Re: Lanarkshire FHS
That's to bad and really strange, Nina and Mary...I wonder how I was approved when I'm no longer a paid up member!
I first re-registered at around 7:00 pm last night and by 7:16 pm I received an email letting me know my registration request had been received and that it would be approved only if I was a financial member then three hours later I received another email stating my account had been manually activated by Admin and I could log in. As I mentioned in my prior email, I used to be a paid member but I had lots of problems logging in for a long time and let it lapse. This time I registered under a different name and email address.
Actually, the old posts haven't been added to the new forum...I think at one time I read there would be a separate link but don't think it's there yet.
Regards,
Anne H

Re: Lanarkshire FHS
Hello, all -
Here is the reason for our confusion: I e-mailed Lanarkshire FHS and received a reply back saying that their forum registration message was needing updated. Their current policy is that the forum is open for all to join. The policy of paid-up members only allowed to join the forum was short-lived, following the swamping of their old forum by spammers.
Once they update the registration wording to match their policy change, we hopefully won't get an initial impression of "No" before the ultimate answer of "Yes."

Re: Lanarkshire FHS
I do think the site takes a high handed attitude, and comes across as exclusive and cliquey - as though they're protecting the crown jewels or something rather than trying to help their members as best they can. This is partly what put me off becoming a fully fledged member in the first place - and partly because I don't feel I should need to become a full 'financial member' of every FHS (or such like) just to make contact with a couple of people who happen to be researching the same name as me, which is all the LHS appears to offer me at the moment (my family only lived in that area intermittently).
Anyway, just an update - yes, patience is a virtue I possess in very small doses. I was approved yesterday and finally made the post I'd wanted to make for quite a while now. Time will tell whether it was worth the wait.
Regards,
Ann
