This is a question. In OPR entries for 'marriage' does the word 'contracted' mean banns? No actual marriage entry found but lawful children baptised soon after.

It may be that the original Church or the Church that is there now has the parish records as I don't think all have been passed to Scotlands People :-(

In the OPRs it is more common for the marriage records to be of the proclamation of the banns rather than the marriage itself. The banns having been successfully proclaimed with no objections raised, it was then okay for the marriage to go ahead. Quite often there is no record of the marriage in the OPRs, so no real proof that it happened, although in most cases it probably did take place.

To quote from the ScotlandsPeople website: "The proclamation of banns was the notice of contract of marriage, read out in the Kirk before the marriage took place."
