Another thought occured to me - if James senior had any brothers and sisters and supposing, just supposing, he was the oldest of the lot it may well be that one of his siblings survived to have their death registered post 1855 which would mention their parents' names, and if you are very very lucky one of James's kids might have been the death informant and helpfully been mentioned as niece or nephew in the death entry.... and then Bobs yer uncle (in a perfect world - but this has worked for me...once!!)

I do have have only one like that in the hundreds i have where an aunt registered the birth
I have another one, on her death cert it just says parents - father......Shaw - soldier, mother...........Shaw , at least its a start
