How do I delete all the living rellies? I just uploaded my gedcom file straight onto it.

I have found someone who has a match to my great great great great gfather. They have both his wife and him and dates.

Is there any other way of contacting people on it rather than paying £10, im stuck for cash for the now and don't want to waste more money.

I'm still relatively new to genealogy. I've found hot matches on the GR site wonderfull - I've found several cousins of my partners and a wealth of information on certain lines of his family. More recently some distant relatives of my direct paternal line - going back to 1665.

Yes - hot matches can be a pain - but I try and match names and at least areas as best as I can. I do try to stick to people with more than a couple of matches - unless it's a line I'm stuck on.

I have just ried to delate a couple of rellies, and have been unable to do so. I've followed all the steps which GR say you have to follow but still no luck. I have now taken the drastic step of deleting my WHOLE tree because of it. What a pain. I've sent an email off to them but decided I couldn't wait for a reply .

I hope to upload a gedcom file but not sure if I'll bother now. Having said that I have made some good contacts through the site so I don't mean to knock it - I just find it quite inflexible for deleting etc.

Hi Fmckay,

I just deleted some names from my family tree on genesreunited.

Go into your family tree and double click on the name you want to delete. That persons name will come up at the bottom of the page for you to edit. It will give you the following options: Save details to tree, reset details, delete relation, copy and paste. If you click on delete relation it will delete that person from your family file. However, it won't let you delete your own name.

A couple of weeks ago I replied to a Hot Match and foolishly exchanged trees.
For the life of me I could find no connection between them. The person appeared to have tacked part of my wife’s family on his own tree. An email from me elicited a totally incomprehensible reply.
Then a few days ago I received another Hot Match from Genes Reunited claiming to have, wait for it - 42 matches with my tree. I replied asking for more information. Needless to say there has been no reply. I subsequently found these supposed Hot Matches came from the same person. A kosher Genes Reunited contact told me she too had been caught out by the same person and had received a similar reply to mine.
It would appear this person hijacks other people’s trees and attaches them to his own. Extremely odd!

From now on, until I’m sure of the other person, I’ll keep my tree to myself.

As ever, we learn by our mistakes don't we. I've never replied to a Hot Match, because the whole list of them looks too much like a random list grabbed from a database. Not enough guidance from the Provider I think.

How many know that its not considered correct to share the names of the living with others, without the permission of those who are named in the tree. Not many, unless they use the GEDCOM from Family Search or LDS where it is a rule there.

With a willingness to share information with others, I've fallen into the same trap privately. Conversely, I have found a few people just falling over themselves to help me which momentarily lulled me into a false sense of camaraderie.

I was and still am subscribed to a number of genealogy groups and lists. Having a signature line with names I was searching, someone approached me off list saying if I was a direct descendant they would like to see my tree, which is in spreadsheet form whilst I validate the names. I shared it, and didnt get an acknowledgement.

Something else to remember and yet, to my way of thinking its obstructive to the whole purpose of genealogy research.

I agree that we learn by our mistakes. The tree with living people that I shared was several years ago now, and I quickly learnt about the practice of drip-feeding information to possible relatives to see how willing they were to give something in exchange. Sadly, occasionally, the GR site often generates those annoying 'can I see you tree' emails which seem best to be ignored. I agree that the Hot Matches feature is a bit useless. I think you have to remember that the site was created by the people who were behind Friends Reunited, which in my personal opinion was a great idea at the start before it became overcomplicated and tried to link people through various other routes such as street reunited, job reunited etc. I'm wondering if GR has gone down a similar avenue with all the 'extra' features. Now that the 'Reunited' stable of sites has been bought out by a well known British TV company it will be interesting to see what happens next. Someone out there might know more, but read that they were going to try and make the sites more 'community' based, which is a little ambiguous.

I've actually found having my own website more useful in making contact with 'cousins' around the world. Of course not everyone can, or has the facility to do this and so I'm lucky in that respect, however some of the people who have been in touch as a result of having a web presence have since become great 'internet' friends and solid research allies. Several even sent little gifts for my new son, and I've never even met them!

As it has been pointed out, it's not a great idea to publish details about living relatives anywhere without their permission, the majority of information on my site relates to people born in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, which seems more than enough to get a few 'bites' every month. As it has been mentioned, forming a relationship with someone with similar interests can be good fun, and very rewarding - especially if the second, third, fourth etc cousin has family photographs that you've never seen before!

Onwards and upwards....

I tried all that and for some names it worked but for others it did not. Depending on how many names are attached to that person etc etc but one of them fitted all the criteria for deleting but it still woudn't let me.
If I upload my FTM tree it means that everyone is on it and I prefer to keep certain things/people private so it looks as if I'll be doing it the slow way! Ho Hum!

In order to delete people who are attached to others on GR you need to delete their children (or the youngest folk in that line first) then their partner, and then finally, you can delete the person. Can take ages to do.

As well as viewing you tree, you can also get at them through the "Immediate Family" link in the menu. BUT, each time you delete someone it will take you right back to the opening page again... not the most efficient tree program in the world.

Yes I tried all that but I was left with a name and his partner, tried to delete partner first but wouldn't let me, so i tried to delete the person but again it wouldn't let me, tried to delete father as he only had the one son and no parents so according to GR you can delete him but no luck. I've deleted the whole thing now so will be more careful next time!
