Hi all

I started a response to this at work and then we had a fierce thundershower and I had to log off before I was finished. The wind blew and the hail fell and then the rain...but now the sun is out and thankfully it's no longer sweltering  .....

Ok...the BIVRI disk set. I bought mine about 2 1/2 years ago in the hopes that I would find not only Scottish rellies but some English and especially Irish ones too. I live far from a FHL and due to my work schedule and the open hours of the library I seldom get there.....so never get a chance to search in the Scottish Parish records cd set held on site. I was really hoping the BIVRI set would contain more records than I could find on the IGI.

So am I satisfied?? Yes!! and why is that? I found English rellie information I didn't have previously. I did not find any Scottish or Irish information sadly.........but I have found a considerable amount of Scottish information for folks posting here on TalkingScot!! So I see the investment as not a waste at all!! A few important things to note....you'll be more likely to find results from Parishes located in "lowland" Scotland as the disk set favors that area. You'll find many more births than marriages. You'll find more OPR classed results than Statutory (or at least it seems that way to me!) And finally.....just because it's on the IGI does not mean it's on the BIVRI disk!!! And viceversa!! Using the two in tandem is always wise! For example many many times I've found on the IGI births of females only to a family but none of the males....but on the BIVRI disks you'll likely pick up some or all of that families male births too!!!! In the US the cost was only $20 delivered right to my mailbox!

Don't forget that just because you can't find anyone of your own...you might just be able to extend a helping hand to someone else....and then that someone else might just extend a helping hand to someone else...and before you know it you've started a chain reaction that at some point will return to you in ways you never imagined possible. Go ahead..what have you got to lose? :D

Best wishes
Jean

PS...And no I don't get kickbacks from the LDS church!

Hi Thomsos & Everybody

I am glad that this subject came up. I bought the BIVRI some months back, as JustJean said, only $20.00, couldn't find anybody at all, related to me or not, and it has been sitting gathering dust in my desk.
To tell the truth, I almost forgot all about it.

I guess that I must have been doing something wrong, because now I can find some people. :  :Nothing that I didn't know before, but at least something. I think that I will play with it a little tomorrow,to learn more about it. That way I may even get to at least help some other people, and maybe even find a few things for myself. :) 8)

I think that if you are lucky, you may find somebody, so don't be like I was Thomsos, there might be some hope still. :D

Regards

Sheila

Greeting's all
Frae a wet and windy Second City the day.
I purchased the British Vital records several years ago and had no luck with the Scottish family names, but a few from England came up, and they did help on the research.
For that kind of money, I think they are worth it.
Interestingly enough, I have had much more success with the Australian version, finding four death records on my own family line.
One was a real help, as the family had moved from Glasgow to Oz in the 1850s and returned to Glasgow in the 1860s.
It gave:
Death
Colin McFarlane
Aged: 1
Father: David
Mother: Mary Black
Date: 1858
Birthplace: Coll
State: Victoria

In 1863 another son was born, also in Coll, named Colin.
He died in West Campbell Street, Glasgow , 1884, aged 21

These are another good value set, well, for me anyway.
How many of us have spent over £10 on SP looking for an individual?

Awrabest
