Problem with the IGI ones is that they are submissions not extracts! I may just kill myself .... alternatively a very large drink may be in order.

As to looking for other folks difficult ones, I do the same myself. This particular case of Janet is a real mystery! Her father is George and he is dead by 23/1/1747 because I've downloaded his Will from SP.

If you find you've more time to kill, please feel free to check my original post on this - Anyone up for a challenge - I'm not proud and will accept any help anyone can offer

Thanks again for your interest.

Cheers ....

Hi Emanday

She serves a very nice red too. I think I'll join the pair of you!

Liz

I ws Googling the George Haliburton (1740) connection and turned up two unusual links. One was a French connection back about 1370 with a Janet involved. The other was Finnish (I think). Both were genealogical but did not translate easily into a more comprehensible format. If anything the French one got worse.
I know it doesn't help your Edinburgh search but does show the Haliburton connections are wide and confirms the family as merchants with considerable overseas clout.

Hi Emanday and Russell

Thanks for your ideas - will pursue them over the next few weeks. This is one of the ones I keep going back to hoping for inspiration.

Following up one of Lesley's comments about a library in Edinburgh, I've found the Signet Library, where they have records of all sorts about Edinburgh going back a long long way. Worth looking at their site if you get the time - they seem to have a possiblity of geneaology enquiries, but no doubt at a cost. Might try to see if they allow the masses in or whether it's just for themselves... http://www.thewss.co.uk/index.asp?cat=Library This would at least be interesting for those with ancestors who were Writers to the Signet (solicitors) in times past.

Hope you and Jean enjoyed the vino collapso ... I've now moved on to vodka! Got a bottle in the freezer chilling right now! Hope you like the history of Lochwinnoch!

All the best

Liz

PS - Apologies Davie for hijacking your post - perhaps someone in admin might move the Haliburton bits to my other post about them, if it's more appropriate :?

Hi Davie

Johnstone is not quite the wilderness that you Glasgow folk might think! I actually come from Lochwinnoch - which really is the country.

Hey a lunchtime meeting is not a bad idea (I work at Glasgow Uni) - met Russell and his lovely assistant Jean last week for some tips on how I should be storing my family tree notes :!: I now know they should not just be dumped in plastic bags in no particular order  Jean's system is really well organised, so I have now started to try and bring order to my 20 years of notes ...

Cheers ... hic hic :-#

PS I've only one Purvis - Elizabeth who married Alexander Dickson 25/10/1807.

Hi Russell
Good stuff!
- "what are you working on?"
- "My family Bonsai!"
Maybe that is what we all need - forget these rambling branches, prune back to the important stuff!!

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Liz

Sorry for jumping in but every time I see your name I wonder if you're the Liz Turner I remember from my childhood in Lochwinnoch & then you go & mention that you come from there!
