Hello Jack
Merry Christmas.
John Was Living in Glasgow most of his life me married there and died there but on all the censuses he states being born Linthigow. The ages don't vary that much on the censuses.
I had a look at teh IGI and all the births for Robert and Euphan are extracted there are alson submitted entries as the daughter Janet went to NZ and there is a submitter for the family's births who stays in NZ.
I will look and see if I can find deaths for some of the names that you have given me to see if that will help to confirm if that is John's parents. Thank you once more for you help.

Hello People
I did searches on SP for the family and they all have the parents name correct - Robert Spence and Euphemia Marshall. On William's death cert his fathers occupation is described as a Leather Merchant which the same as my Johns death cert.
Most of that family stayed in Shoemaking and are least 2 brothers went into medicine. I don't know if this helps me or not but I am thinking this could be the parents that I am looking for. Has anyone have any futher thoughts about this family? I would be please to hear from you so that I can confirm one way or another if this is my family.

Hi Heather,
No conclusive evidence.
But father Robert SPENCE's occupation on these three DCs does have a connection to leather.
Maybe he was all of them at various periods over the years.
John's DC says Leather Merchant.

Shoe Manufacturer - Alexander b.1795 - died as aged 68, Linlithgow 1864.
Tanner - Edward b.1805 - died as aged 65, Iona 1870.

Hi Heather,
Do you have children for John SPENCE. Mayby they used the naming pattern. You said one of John's sons may have signed the DC and that he married and lived most his life in Glasgow, so mayby his children never met their Gran, whereas the other families stayed in Linlithgow, more likely to know the correct name of Granny.
