Hi Sarah,

I am not an expert, and I'll be interested to hear what the experts think. That being said, my gut says taht unless your index uses copyrighted material, I'm not sure how it is any different than someone writing any other sort of thing about an existing book, such as a book review or literary criticism or whatever.

Hi Kathy,
Your take on it sounds reasonable to me. It may be that, instead of integrating a more thorough indexing into the existing index, I would need to just put up the additions?
We'll see.

Sarah

Hi Sarah

I am certainly not an expert either, but I wonder if there would be an infringement on copyright in what you would be doing, (simply putting in an index for readers), if you did it for profit.

As you say it would help sell the books.

Hi Sarah

Expert opinion received, - your proposal would not, in their opinion, be a breach of copyright, and, as I suspected, you would hold the copyright in your index.

See PM for the full opinion.

Thanks, David.
So everyone, what it looks like is that I can't put up the full index, that is mine plus the existing one, but just my additions. That is fair enough. I will post it when I have got it together. Meanwhile, if anyone has any of these books and wants to help, send me a PM.
All the best,
Sarah

A terrible thing happened  I'm sure I had my well-thumbed copy of Alienated Affections when I was sitting in the airport in Paris waiting for the plane. By the time I got off the plane in Detroit, however, it had vanished.[alien] This was the copy where I had pencilled in hundreds of names and page numbers to add to the index... and I had only managed to type surnames A-B into my computer  I hadn't indexed the whole book, but had done the large part of it. So... I just found a used copy on Amazon for $5.20 and will get back to work when that arrives. [sigh] Wonder who will find the copy in Paris?!

Sarah

Hi Anne,
No, I didn't think of checking lost property... I'll give it a try, but I don't have much hope. We searched our area of the plane pretty well, so I think it was left in the waiting area at the gate-- or maybe on the bus that took us to the plane?

Hi Sarah

What a shame you lost it after all that work. Here is hoping that it can be found.
