Hah!! Only problem is.....the map I was looking at and the Niddery I thought I had found was a mining village south of Portobello .....I just went back to the Old Parish map and lo and behold...there's anither one ricth there in Kirkliston like Andrew says!! But the map I'm looking on has Carlowrie situated across the border in Kirkliston too!???!???! Like I said....laudable Geography skills .....at least my intentions were honorable..

I've had another clue from a non-member who has been challenging Google puzzling this one out. On trying various spellings she tried Nithrie and that lead to Jhone Wachope of Nithrie (by modern spelling Sir John Wauchope of Niddrie). That Niddrie is the one to the east of Edinburgh, but using the principle that there is a means of leading from Nithrie to Niddrie, then Niddry in Kirkliston parish has to be a strong contender.

With this information and a bit of guessology of mine, could the "dd" and "th" pairs be linked in old Scots? In Welsh language, "dd" is pronounced similar to "th" in English. Or is there a link through the Icelandic letter eth, Đ or ð? Anybody out there with the knowledge to confirm or dispute this line of guesswork?

No problem with your geography. An 1850s map that I have had a look at just now shows Easter Carlowrie in Dalmeny parish, beside the parish boundary. A few hundred yards away, on the other side of the parish boundary, (you've guessed it) is Wester Carlowrie.

Hi All

Niddrie (Niddry) had crossed my mind.

My early childhood was spent playing and clambering around Niddry Castle and the surrounding area.

The only reason I ruled it out was it was the first time I had come across it in the OPRs for this family. There again it's the only time a place name has been used in any of the entries I've looked at

So unless someone comes up with anything better, it looks like it is Niddry.
