I've had another clue from a non-member who has been challenging Google puzzling this one out. On trying various spellings she tried Nithrie and that lead to Jhone Wachope of Nithrie (by modern spelling Sir John Wauchope of Niddrie). That Niddrie is the one to the east of Edinburgh, but using the principle that there is a means of leading from Nithrie to Niddrie, then Niddry in Kirkliston parish has to be a strong contender.JustJean wrote:Hah!!Only problem is.....the map I was looking at and the Niddery I thought I had found was a mining village south of Portobello

No problem with your geography. An 1850s map that I have had a look at just now shows Easter Carlowrie in Dalmeny parish, beside the parish boundary. A few hundred yards away, on the other side of the parish boundary, (you've guessed it) is Wester Carlowrie.JustJean wrote:But the map I'm looking on has Carlowrie situated across the border in Kirkliston too!???!???! Like I said....laudable Geography skills.....at least my intentions were honorable..
