Hi All

Just made 3 contacts on my hot matches.

One family has been very elusive, the males dying young or not marrying and the female line "losing" the name over the years. This was a great treat.

Another contact came from Oz. Another surprise! A 44 year old I'd "lost" after the 1861 census, turned up in Edinburgh, from the Lothians, where he married in 1874, changed occupations from farmer to spirit merchant, had 3 kids and then died in 1880! One of the kids went to Oz in 1910 and I've now heard from her great grandson!

Number 3 is a bit of a side line, but nonetheless, very interesting.

I've had great success with GR.
Am I the only one who has 4 pages of verified contacts on the GR site?

Best wishes
Jean

I've not done as well as you Jean but I've made some really good contacts through GR. In fact, the best one only showed up as 1 match but when I opened it there were considerably more &, as this 4th cousin & I turn out to live only 2 miles apart, I not only gained a huge limb of my tree I have a good friend as well! A cousin I'd lost contact with 20 years ago also popped up last week - her mother had shown up as the hot match.

But I do agree that there's a huge amount of dross & if they would just take the geographical location into account it would make life so much easier.

I have had a few contacts, but sometimes you wonder why your name comes up with somebody born in another country, my membership is up soon and I am not sure wether to renew it or try another site that covers scottish census/birth deaths and marriages anyone got any advise about this. :)

Hi All

My membership with Genes Reunited is coming up for renewal. I will not be renewing it. Unlike many people here who have too many Hot Matches, I have never had one. I did make a contact with the wife of a second cousin. Neither of us could help one another as we had come to the same dead ends. I was lucky in one way, she sent me a picture of my grandmother's sister. :D I really appreciated it as I have no pictures of my grandparents.

Except for that one contact, I have never heard from anyone else. I guess that none of my ancestors living relatives except myself is interested in Genealogy. :(

Sheila,
I wonder if you have "hot matches" turned on in your preferences? I got fed up trying to sort them out and went into my details and turned them off.
I no longer pay a sub to GR but still get contacted occasionally by people who do go through their hot matches and I am still able to reply if they initiate contact - just thought you might like to know that if you decide not to renew :)

Hello BlueLadyBird

I can understand what you mean about the amount of hot matches with totally different locations.
I was pondering whether to renw my membership, but I did and after uploading my "new tree" got a good couple of matches. I was a bit peeved off though when I only got six months membership for the same price as I was just past my expiry date, not a happy camper!!!

(Although I haven't joined GR I have to say) I don't see how you can dismiss any location. My tree (and OH's) seems to move all over the place at times e.g. I've recently discovered that both errant gfathers were in New York in 1930 and OH had folk there too yet all three are from totally different parts of the UK.

I know the hot matches can be a pain but I've found several contacts while scrolling through the pages of one matches...some people are not as advanced with their tree as others so I always check.

My greatest success to date is from one match...a third cousin contacted me a few years back and finally this summer we met up. He's opened up a side of my family that I knew very little about and has even taken me to meet a first cousin of my late dad's who my immediate family had lost touch with.

JeanJeanie, I've been fortunate to have great success too and am onto page 4 of verified contacts as well :D
