Hi Roger
Croft there is no letter with a descender
It does not have a descender if you type it, but the "f" will always be a descender in 18-whotsit! Not convinced it is Croft - could end ss - the first "s" of which
will be a descender!
Hope someine else can just "see" what it is; sometimes when you look too long, it gets harder to see thewood for the trees!

Forget the SS!
I think it looks like Corp as you suggest as in Corporation perhaps - miners houses belonging to the mining company?

Not sure about the word beginning with C......, but both Dundyvan and Langloan were villages before being incorporated into Coatbridge and are still there.
