Hi all, and thanks to Tracey for letting us know.
Ancestry seems to be handing out five days of access, starting when one goes there, and when I looked now, dot com was open as well as dot co UK with better search machines for, I think, pretty well the same resources. My "account" says until 7th., so adrenalin rising but not a single "find" so far; I suppose that means I was thorough in the past!

Guid hunting,

Thrall

Yes, I agree a "big thankyou"to Tracey for letting us know.
Hopefully I will still have access when I get home as I still have over 1000 John Ross's to look at in the 1841 census. Did find 2 or 3 with a Margaret as wife, so they seem possible but none have a daughter Elizabeth (who was Betsy in the 1851) born around 1837 going by her age of 14 on the 51 which agrees with all other census records right through to the 1901.
Unfortunately, the couple don't seem to have other children between Elizabeth and another daughter Helen born in 1842. Anyone got any ideas they can give me?
Sorry for the rambling.
Regards
Bertha

Hi there,
Both the 1901 and the 1911 Canadian census have been availlable online for sometime for free at the National Archives site .

for 1901 http://www.collectionscanada.ca/02/020122_e.html
for 1911 http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivi ... dex-e.html

For other census you have to know a little about Canada. Its a relatively new country 1867 to be exact. Beginning with Nova Scotia ,Ontario ,New Brunswick and Quebec .Followed by Matitoba and the Northwest Territories in 1870 and British Columbia in 1871 .Prince Edward Island joined in 1873 and the Yukon in 1898 .Both Alberta and Saskatchewan joined in 1905 .
Until 1949 Newfoundland was first a colony of Great Britain and finally a country in her own right . This is why so many today still consider themselves Newfoundlanders first and Canadians second .
I remember being taught about the Canadian flag as a Brownie and how it had 1 point for each of the 9 provinces and 2 on the bottom for the 2 Territories.(As I was a Brownie in the 1970s you can tell we were still using very out of date books.)
But we weren't finished growing yet . In 1999 a new territory of Nunavut was created and Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip paid a visit and were warmly welcomed by both Natives and whites .

Because of the different entry dates for all the provinces and territories not all census are complete and not all offer the same information .For a more complete listing of free Canadian census availlable try this site ...
http://www.censusfinder.com/canada-census-records.htm
As for Newfoundland , I believe though I may be mistaken , has some of the best genealogy sites availlable .Focusing mainly on the Avalon Peninsula as that is where the largest part of the population settled though other census and parish records for across the island also exist . Should anyone need the URLs for some of these please feel free to ask.
Happy Hunting,
HeatherH

PS I should have added this site for Nova Scotia which is really nice .

Hi Maggie, I had a quick look, and although there is no shortage of Magees, none at exactly the right date. I can send you the list of six 1840-1880 but there is no additional info available. No Fannie either, I'm afraid.

Will PM you,

Thrall

Maggie,

Like Thrall I couldn't find any naturalisation records to fit the dates.
I presume you have all the census records for him and Fannie?
