Hi again,
David, I didn't see that you added to your post! The beautiful scenery idea would definitely go over well, and then I could stay in the archives in my sleeping bag

Archiver, hi :D As you may remember, some of the kirk session records I'm interested in are Old Machar, and I believe those are still held there. When we went there last November, I was given the name of the archivist and have written him for information but not heard back yet. To your knowledge, is it correct that the Old Machar Kirk Session records are still held at the cathedral?

Next day edit: Just got a letter from the Old Machar archivist. He couldn't find anything on my family in the Kirk Session :( They were in Woodside, which would have come under Old Machar in the time period (1800-1812 or thereabouts). Do you think there is any chance I could find something in the St Nicholas records?

Regards,
Sarah

Hi Sarah

I'm afraid I've developed the bad habit of "saving" a post by posting it, if you see what I mean, and then completing it via the edit procedure

So would he have got away with fornicating in the north door of the church?

Kind regards,

Alison

Hi Sarah,

I'm glad you got a reply from St Machar, though not the one you were looking for, unfortunately. I'm not sure what the situation would be regarding Woodside - I know we've got records of Congregational Churches, but I'm not sure what date. Woodside didn't come into the city until 1891, but it's possible that there might be something in St Nicholas. I'm on holiday at the moment, so will find out for you and let you know!

Hi again,
The conclusion the Old Machar archivist came to, and it makes some sense, is that the family I'm looking for appear to have been Episcopalians (at least they were later on) and so would have come under the records of that church... do such exist for that time period?
Have a great holiday! I'll discuss this with you when you're back at work :D

Hi Sarah,

The LDS has the following offerings for Aberdeen's Episcopalian churches.

Title Baptisms of St. John's Episcopal Church, Aberdeen, 1778-1855
Stmnt.Resp. compiled by Archibald Strath Maxwell
FHL BRITISH Film 908173 Item 4

Title Register of baptisms, 1778-1855
Authors St. John's Episcopal Church (Aberdeen, Scotland) (Main Author)
Maxwell, Archibald Strath (Added Author)
FHL BRITISH Film 301107 Item 1

Title Register of births, marriages, and deaths in the Episcopal Church of St. Paul's, Aberdeen, 1720-1865
Authors St. Paul's Chapel (Aberdeen : Episcopal) (Main Author)
FHL BRITISH Film 241993

Title Register of marriages cont'd, St. Paul's, Aberdeen, Scotland
Authors St. Paul's Chapel (Aberdeen : Episcopal) (Main Author)
FHL BRITISH Book

Title The registers of baptisms, St. Paul's Chapel, Aberdeen, Aberdeen Scotland, from 1720-1737
Authors St. Paul's Chapel (Aberdeen : Episcopal) (Main Author)
FHL BRITISH Book

These don't seem to have come from NAS. I don't know if these are in the Aberdeen Archives, or if the LDS went to the churches for these records.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thanks, Andrew :D
I was just wondering if the fact that they were Episcopalians might have something to do with why the baptisms for this family are not found on the OPRs online. Looks like I'll need to rent the films and hope for the best. It seems the equivalent of the Kirk Session records might not exist... was hoping to get a handle on the couple's separation and subsequent legal wranglings. But I will settle for baptisms if I could actually find them :D
Thanks for looking,
Sarah

Anyone with interests in Rathven Kirk Sessions Minutes should take a look at this. http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/sheena_charles/sessmins.htm
Not the first time i have mentioned this web site as it has been and continues to be a huge help to me.
But even if your interests are else where is still good, sad, amusing reading
